Obituary
Scott, Elizabeth Mae – It is through a veil of tears and sadness that the family of Elizabeth Mae Scott (Betty) announce her passing on September 02, 2024 at Roseway Hospital after a short, horrible illness.
Predeceased by her granddaughter, Melissa, and in June 2024, husband of 71 years, Stanley, she leaves behind her precious children; Scotty Scott (Tonya), Rene Scott (Georgina), Raymond Scott (Jayne) and April Scott (Gerry). Also left to grieve her exit from this realm are her beautiful grandchildren of whom she was immensely proud; Angèle, Robert, Amy, Ashley, Marcel, Felicia, Stephen, Caleigh, Dakota and Sierra.
Betty lived a full life and made sure she tried many things and went on a lot of journeys. She loved to travel- spending many weekends away on BINGO bus trips to Bangor and other places with her loyal and loving friend, Bobbi. The shopping didn’t interest her a lot but oh, how she loved her BINGO! She would also often travel to Florida and Maine with her daughter-in-law, Jayne and there, they would have all kinds of fun filled adventures. She supported her husband, Stanley, and children Rene, Raymond, and April as they traveled to Hayward, Wisconsin to compete in the Lumberjack World Championships. She would have been their biggest fan!
In mid-life, Betty, being the musician she was, decided to try playing the fiddle. Undaunted, she traveled to Bridgewater, including through winters that were true winters back then, every week to take fiddle lessons for over 3 years. She was a great student and picked up this rather difficult instrument quite well to the point of being able to perform for audiences. Soon, she was given the name of “The Fiddlin’ Gramma”!
She decided one day she would like to learn to play electric bass. In doing so, she could play with her daughter, April, in her musical adventures. Again, this came easy for her as she had a great ear for music. Soon, the living room was adorned with guitars and amps of all sizes.
Her musicianship did not end there. Even before the ‘fiddle phase’ and ‘bass playing phase’, Betty was a very proficient pianist. It was said she used to play the piano at old time dances at Sandhills. That was a few years ago. She always had a piano in her house and often played it for her children. Exposing them to the joy of music was important for her. She brought a Beatles album into the house and Scotty and April pretty well wore the grooves down in the record. In recent years, Betty would play the piano at church services. Those who were lucky to hear her have remarked on how they will miss her beautiful music that filled the church up to the rafters.
She was a natural performer who, as a child, always dreamed of being an actress. In later years, Betty acted in a number of plays organized and performed by the Wesley United Theater Group in which she played her role very convincingly and like a pro.
Betty was not afraid of hard work. She juggled home life, a hungry husband, and 4 snarling kids while working as a telephone operator for (then) Maritime Tel and Tel in Barrington at the telephone office which is now Eastbay Realty . She had a great group of friends who worked with her; Thelma Lamrock, Faye Watt being those she mentioned often. She was also able to keep her kids in line from work since she was on the switchboard, they would not bother to try calling their friends because she screened every single call. “Number please?”
Once the telephone system went to direct dial telephones, her job was phased out and Betty decided to try her hand at driving big vehicles. I mean huge vehicles like semi trucks. She would be seen at Clark’s Harbour backing a herring tanker down a wharf which is quite an accomplishment! She was afraid of nothing; so much that when she had her share of truck driving, she decided to be a school bus driver. She was one of two of the first women bus drivers at the time who worked with the local school board. Talk about being a trend setter!
Betty was an artisan. She crocheted doilies and ornaments, embroidered pillowcases and tablecloths, and cross stitched photos to adorn her home, and the homes of others. She knitted mittens and socks to keep the hands and feet of her family warm. She knitted sweaters for newborn babies. You had a baby? You got a sweater from Betty. The sweater phase took on a new life when Lopi Sweaters were all the rage. She knitted these most sought after sweaters for her entire family one year for Christmas. If there was a creative craft to be done, Betty could do it flawlessly.
One of the most notable things Betty is known best for are her beautiful handmade quilts. If you have one, you’re very lucky. The precision and care with which these quilts were made entirely by hand is nothing short of amazing. Along with creating quilts herself at home, she spent many days sitting around the quilt bar with fellow quilters at the Goodwill Club, where talented hands gather to finish quilts for others.
When Betty wasn’t at the quilt bars stitching, she busied herself in the evenings either bowling on a bowling team, or going to BINGO with her “BINGO- Going Friends” – as husband, Stanley would refer to the whole expedition as being. She believed that one should make the most of each day. That included evening activities as well as the regular cooking and cleaning duties of a lumberjack wife during the day.
Betty was quick witted and very clever. She ruled the house with an iron fist. Good thing because it’s hard to say how things might have turned out. Among her parting words, she expressed her love to all her children and grandchildren and hoped she had done a good job raising them. She certainly did.
Betty will be missed by many, and her home that always smelled of baking brown bread or some savory meal prepared with capable hands will never be the same without her there, sitting in her rocking chair with her faithful canine companion, Billy, cutting out pretty fabric for her next quilt or reading one of her many books.
Cremation has taken place under the direction of Huskilson’s Funeral Home and Crematorium in Barrington.
There will be a celebration of her life at the former Wesley United Church in Barrington, on Sunday, September 15th at 2:00pm. Despite the fact that she was unsuccessful in convincing her children and husband to regularly attend church, she remained true and committed to a Sunday worship. It is fitting we say our final goodbyes to her in a church she loved. After a short service, there will be a reception in the downstairs room at the same venue.
In lieu of flowers, as floral arrangements have been prepared by family members, you are graciously invited to make a donation to either the Barrington Goodwill Club, St. James United Church, or to the Yarmouth SPCA.
