HAYES, Gwendolyn Gloria-Mary, «Gwen» (nee Marratto)
July 3, 1930 – September 6, 2024
After a very difficult six months, Gwen is finally at peace. Relieved, but heartbroken is husband Chuck, her other half’ for 69-years. Her passing has left kids Mike (Alana), Matt (Patti), Lisa (Tim Tuck) and Maria (Scot Urquhart) longing for her hugs, brilliant smile and instantly recognizable laugh. Mom was a true nurturer, and there was nothing more important than her family. She was overjoyed to watch it grow, and we are all blessed she was here to see her «11 friggin’ grandkids» grow into well-established adults. Justin (Tabitha), Brandon, Travis (Amanda), Kyra (Kyle), Dani (Ivars), Adam (Jana), Jessica, Jonah (Charlotte) Tessa, Reid (Aislinn) and Coryn (Mitchell) cared deeply for Grandma/Nanny. And she relished their playful ribbing. She never imagined she would be here long enough for great-grandchildren, but Mom welcomed ten beauties – Riley, Brooklyn, Tenley, Emmy, Lea, Evie, Harlow, Declyn, Emma, Bella and sweet, heavenly Charlie who she is no doubt cuddling now. Mom is reunited in heaven with her parents Louis and Winnifred (nee Putland) Marratto, brothers Reg (Barb), Gord and sister Mads (Jim) Sutherland. She is survived by sister-in-law Cindy Marratto and a loving pack of nieces and nephews who tolerated their crazy aunt’s antics, especially the ‘Old MacDonald’ sing-a-longs. Mom threw a great party. She despised cooking, but we always had food, and there was always room for one more at her table. She didn’t take herself too seriously, and would go to great lengths for a laugh. She believed in speaking from the heart, was incredibly sentimental and cherished the thought behind a homemade card. She had a natural warmth that was engaging, and she treasured her friendships, believing the adage ‘no friends like your old friends.’ She never left anyone without a big hug, and a warm goodbye. Although we are torn with sadness, we are blessed now, to do the same for her. Visitation will be held at P.X. Dermody Funeral Home, 796 Upper Gage Ave. Hamilton on Monday, September 9, 2024 from 3-5 and 7-9. Funeral Mass will be celebrated at Cathedral Basilica of Christ the King, 714 King St W, Hamilton on Tuesday, September 10, 2024 at 10 a.m. As expressions of sympathy, donations can be made to MitoCanada, Colorectal Cancer Canada or the Hamilton Burlington SPCA.
