Obituary for
Pauline Carter
Pauline Katherine (Foster) Carter (1923-2024)
We are sad to announce the passing of our mother on August 27, 2024, at Colchester East Hants Health Centre, Truro. Pauline was born at home in Princeport, Nova Scotia, on December 6, 1923, to the late Gertrude Marion Carmichael and Clarence William Foster. Pauline graduated from Colchester County Academy and the Provincial Normal College, Truro. In the 1940s, Pauline taught in one-room schoolhouses in Colchester County and worked at Carter’s Paints and Carter’s China & Gift Shop in Truro. She later provided home care to local families and worked at the Brookfield Post Office.
Pauline married (Wesley) Brenton Carter in 1950 and raised a family of five: Alan (Lorraine), Brookfield; Arthur, Dartmouth; Cathryn Biddulph, Dartmouth; David (Judith Kelly-Carter), Brookfield; and Christine (Stephen Taggart), Dartmouth. She played a significant role in the lives of her seven grandchildren: Robert (Yolanda) Biddulph, Lawrencetown; Daniel (Danielle) Biddulph, Kelowna, BC; Alice Carter (Matthew Keel), Bible Hill; Katherine Carter (Mason Purdy), Hilden; Rachel Carter (Kraig Bates), Truro; Sarah Taggart, Dartmouth; Ellen Taggart (Andrew Snyder), Dartmouth; and one great-grandchild: Isabella Biddulph, Lawrencetown. She was predeceased by her husband; sister, Ruby (Foster, Drake) Hatfield; brother, Henry Foster; son-in-law, James Biddulph; and many special brothers-in-law, sisters-in-law, nieces and nephews.
Pauline made many interactions into teachable or caregiving “moments.” Whether she was creating personalized poems and brown sugar fudge for her Sunday School students, writing letters, drawing pictures for her grandchildren, or collecting her favourite china, she approached all activities with enthusiasm. Pauline’s interest in genealogy, writing and research influenced “A History of Pleasant Valley,” while her culinary skills and desire to preserve ancestral recipes inspired “The Great Nova Scotia Cookbook.” A careful restoration of her own home led her to write a chapter in “Affairs with Old Houses.” She was honoured to receive heritage and community awards for her work. She also loved old-time music and was tapping her toes to her favourite fiddle tunes to the end.
Thank you to the many people who made our mother’s last 15 years more comfortable, including VON Homecare (especially Kim, Sonya, Naudia, Shelby, Susan, Elizabeth and Carol); VON Nursing; her caregivers (especially Pauline and Melissa); and the Colchester East Hants Health Centre Palliative Care Team (especially Drs. Monroe, Kelly and Henderson, Hannah and nurses).
A Memorial Service will be held on Saturday, September 7, 2024, at 3:00 p.m. at Colchester Community Funeral Home, 512 Willow Street, Truro, with Rev. Larry Harrison officiating. Family flowers only. Donations may be made to ALS Society of NB and NS, Heart and Stroke Foundation of NS, Knox United Church, Brookfield, or a charity of your choice. Webcasting will begin at 2:58pm (ADT) and is available along with on-line condolences at www.ColchesterCommunity.com
