It is with deep
sadness that the family announces the passing of Wilfred (Gregg)
Cumberland on February 23, 2023 at the Dr. Everett Chalmers Hospital
in Fredericton, New Brunswick. Gregg was born on June 28,1947 in St.
Stephen, New Brunswick.
He is survived by his wife of
57 years, Virginia Jeanette (Judy) Cumberland. His children Wendy
Cumberland (Michael Ketchum), Teresa (Terri) Morris (Gerry).
Grandchildren Leah DuPlessis (Cameron), Katie
(‘Kate’ to Papa) Hamill, Benjamin Gregg (Ben)
Morris, Andrew (Andy) Morris. Step grandchildren Emmett Ketchum (Jen),
Jared Ketchum (Kristie). Great grandchildren Theodore (Teddy) Gabriel
DuPlessis and Lucas Gregg DuPlessis. Sister Lynn Pelham (Michael),
Mother-in-law Doreen Lawrence, Sisters-in-law Elizabeth Fusk (Burt),
Carole Webb (Brian) and ‘Uncle Gregg’ to his
nieces and nephews. He was predeceased by his mother and father,
Phyllis and Wilfred Durrell (Duke) Cumberland, father-in-law Byron
Lawrence and brother-in-law Gordon
Lawrence.
Gregg was a professional
electrical engineer and worked at Neill and Gunter for many years. He
worked across Canada as well as internationally in Scotland,
Wisconsin, Georgia and throughout Europe on projects that included
world class breweries, OSB plants and industrial power
complexes.
Gregg was a man of integrity
and passion, and an exceptionally creative problem solver. He loved
his family beyond measure and was always willing to offer a listening
ear. He was happiest with a dog on his knee and always shared the last
bite from his plate with whichever dogs were with him at the time (his
own or his granddogs). Chewy, his little Texas rescue dog had a
special spot in Gregg’s heart. Gregg’s son-in-law,
Gerry recently commented to him that he had shared his love of dogs
with his two daughters, he smiled and proudly said «sure
did».
One of Gregg’s many
passions was playing the guitar, both acoustic and electric. He played
in bands from high school to the present day, beginning with the
Impala’s. His last band gig was October
15th, 2022 for a
high school reunion at the Fredericton Motor Inn. As his mother wrote
in a book of memories «They’d start a number and the
place would just fill with people to dance.» His biggest fans
were his daughters Terri and Wendy. Gregg’s love of music
lead him to the love for dancing with Judy. Over the years Gregg and
Judy took lots of dance lessons and could be found jiving on many a
dance floor, where they made countless
friends.
Gregg loved boating,
specifically on the Lower Saint John River system. He and Judy owned
several boats over the years, each of which was named «C
Cruise». Gregg was Commodore of the Oromocto Boat Club for 7
years and made life-long friendships through his years on the water.
In the last 20 years, they continued to enjoy the water at their
cottage at Robertson’ Point on Grand
Lake.
Over the course of his life,
Gregg’s interests seemed limitless and included his love of
travel, scuba diving, snorkeling, camping with friends – and
countless adventures within each
endeavour.
While at times a man of few
words, Gregg was always willing and able to explore ideas with
in-depth conversation. He was an avid reader and enjoyed the creative
process of writing, especially character development. Gregg would
often have a single idea spark many hours of writing at his laptop. He
wrote several novels and published ‘The Journey
Home’.
The family would like to offer
a special thank you to Dr. Khaleduzzaman, Dr. Schaus and the nurses of
3SW, 3NE and CCU. As Gregg would say «Thank you. Appreciate
it.»
