Dorothy Elizabeth Vail
May 26, 1946 – July 28, 2024
It is with great sadness that we announce the passing of Dorothy Elizabeth Vail of Lower Eel Brook, Nova Scotia at the age of 78. Dorothy was born in Montague, Prince Edward Island on May 26, 1946, the daughter of Robert Lee Crane and Bertha Maude (Llewellyn) Crane. She is survived by her loving husband of 57 years, Clifford and their two sons, Scott (Shelley), Sluice Point, NS and Corey (Melissa), Arcadia, NS; granddaughter Raven; brother Ken (Donna), Tusket, NS; sister Joan McCreight, Edmonton, Alberta; as well as many nieces and nephews, grandnieces and grandnephews. Dorothy was predeceased by her parents; brother, Robert; sisters Joyce and Shirley; brothers-in-law Maurice McCreight and Gordon MacDonald.
Dorothy (Dot) dearly loved her family and friends. She especially loved to play cards every Saturday night. She truly enjoyed camping, we all remember the “Minnie Winnie”, Dot and Cliff’s first camper. She enjoyed camping with the Eel Brook Campers and her time at Jaggars Point Campground.
Dorothy worked at the Bison Restaurant in her teen years where she met the love of her life, Cliff. They were married in Charlottetown on August 31, 1966. They moved to Yarmouth, NS. They then settled in Lower Eel Brook, NS shortly afterwards, where they started their family. The family took many trips to Prince Edward Island over the years. One of Dot’s favourite spots was Panmure Island, where she loved digging for clams.
Dorothy has had a very distinguished career with Fundy Group Publications, known to many in the community as “The Vanguard.”
Here are a few words from Dorothy’s employer, colleague and great friend and the owner of Fundy Group Publications, RB Cameron:
“In 1980, Dorothy was in charge of getting print jobs expedited and out to customers: a huge job. Shortly after, Fundy’s General Manager left so a new GM was needed. The publisher asked Dorothy if she would apply for the GM position but she declined. Shortly afterwards, she asked what would be involved with the position while insisting she didn’t want it. That was a great day for Fundy Group because we then knew she wanted to give it a go. And did she ever give it a go.”
Under Dorothy’s leadership, she grew Fundy Group from a small town newspaper and printer to the largest printer and publishing operation in Atlantic Canada with national customers in the grocery and pharmacy industries. Fundy Group had newspapers in Liverpool (The Advance), Shelburne (The Coastguard), Yarmouth (The Yarmouth Vanguard: Tuesday & Friday editions), and Digby (The Digby Courier). She was also in charge of two leading publications in Atlantic Canada for the fisheries (The Sou’Wester) and farming industry (The Farm Focus) as well as the largest TV Guide in Halifax (The Metro Telecaster).
She was responsible for setting up, near the Yarmouth Airport, the first heat set printing operation in the Maritime Provinces. The new airport operation was a multi million-dollar expenditure.
“ Without Dorothy at the helm neither my father or me would have proceeded. I don’t know how she did it, but I think it was because she was able to get the most out of people because of her way.”
“Dorothy had a presence about her in so much as she always appeared in control in a calm way.”
RB Cameron recalls some years ago, the local banker in Yarmouth who looked after Fundy Group’s banking told him that when he visited Fundy, he didn’t want to leave. That was how Dorothy came across with people; they wanted to be in her presence.
Dorothy and RB had a strong business relationship, which turned into a strong relationship between two families.
Dot (Mom) was a great influence to many people. At the many social gatherings she attended, she would often be heard saying, “This place is electric!” Her laughter was infectious; she will be dearly missed by all.
The family would like to thank the palliative care team at the Yarmouth Regional Hospital, especially Dr. Cooper. Thank you to the nurses and doctors of 4 North for Dorothy’s excellent care. A special thank you to her nephew Stephen Vail for all of your spiritual guidance. Many thanks to family and friends for your kindness and support.
A Celebration of Life for family and friends will be held on Saturday, November 9,2024 from 1-4 p.m. at the Club Acadien, Ste. Anne du Ruisseau, NS. Everyone is welcome to come for music and light refreshments. Donations may be made in her
name to “Friends of Gilles Boudreau Cancer Help Fund.” Online condolences may be made at www.sweenysfuneralhome.net
