It is with great sadness that we announce the peaceful passing of Richard “Dick” Edward Armstrong on Friday, July 26, 2024 in the Melfort Union Hospital, surrounded by family after a courageous battle with cancer. Richard was a beloved husband, father, grandfather, uncle and friend.
Richard was born in Tisdale on September 7, 1955, to Norville and Dorothy Armstrong. He was the second oldest of four siblings. As a young boy, Richard lived on the family farm south of Star City where he grew up and enjoyed playing sports, especially hockey and football. He cherished time spent at the lake with his family and learned the nuances of farming alongside his father, instilling in him the value of hard work—a principle he carried throughout his life.
Richard married the love of his life, Cathy Love, on November 10, 1973, in Calgary, Alberta. In their first year of marriage, they welcomed their son Michael Edward on August 30, 1974. Richard juggled parenthood with work, while Cathy pursued nursing school. Several years later, their family expanded with the birth of their daughter Carolyn Dawn on December 16, 1977, still in Calgary. In 1981, their third child, Sherri Lynn, completed their family of five when she was born on June 12th in Melfort. Richard found himself outnumbered three to two!
In 1981, Richard relocated his family to North Battleford to embark on a new business venture, owning and managing «North Battleford’s Danish Home Bakery» as a journeyman baker. Cathy assisted with cake decorating and bread slicing while balancing her role as a Registered Nurse at the local hospital.
The Armstrong’s returned to Star City in the summer of 1986, settling on the Love homestead. Richard enthusiastically joined his father and brother Pat in the family farming endeavor. He found solace and joy in farm life, overseeing a large pig barn, cows, horses for the girls’ 4-H activities, and chickens for amusement. He felt completely at ease and back in his element, confirming it was the right decision for his family to be on the farm.
In 2015 Richard retired as a farmer but that didn’t stop him. He couldn’t take the farmer out of the boy so he continued to still help out with farming for several years later. After Richard’s retirement, during the off-season, he spent some time travelling on land and water. After several years of their travels, they traded in their cruise line tickets for an RV and boat and made different memories at a permanent site at Tobin Lake for 11 years before fulfilling his dream of buying a cabin.
Richard’s passions included camping, fishing, and most of all, spending time with his family—his three children, 11 grandchildren, and 6 great-grandchildren were his greatest treasures. He was known for his knack for catching fish and his perpetual tinkering with tools to fix or build things for others showcased his generous spirit. He was always so kind, willing to lend a helping hand in any way he could.
Richard will be deeply missed and is survived by his loving wife of 51 years, Cathy; son Michael (Lisa) and their children Katlin, Paige (Kurt), Josh, and Matthew, and great-grandchildren Raeleigh, Danika, Aubrey, and Charlie; daughter Carolyn and her children Madison, Ashlyn (Dallas), Tyrell, Ethan, and Hunter, along with great-grandchildren Hanna and Hudson; daughter Sherri (Anthony) and her children Hailey and Sophia. He is also survived by his siblings Janet, Pat (Penny), Margaret (Delbert), and numerous nieces and nephews.
Richard was predeceased by his parents Norville and Dorothy Armstrong, his mother and father-in-law Betty and Fred Love, his brother-in-law Michael Gorkoff, and his son-in-law Robert Stailing.
A graveside celebration of life will be held at a later date for Richard’s family and close friends. Those who wish to make a memorial donation in honor of Richard can contribute to The Canadian Cancer Society.
A special thank you to Dr. Stoll, Dr. Manna and all of the nurses at Melfort Union hospital.
