Obituary of Leo Gerard Brown
BROWN, Leo Gerard (Gregg Lee)- Age 68 of Innisfil, Ont. It is with great sadness we
announce his sudden passing on July 16, 2024, at the QEII Halifax Infirmary. Born in
Glace Bay and a proud Maritimer, he was the only child of the late John C. Brown and
Mary (McGillivray) Brown.
Heaven is now a neater, cleaner place since Leo Brown has been there fixing it up. The
angels have a brighter, clearer sound system thanks to Leo tweaking the subwoofer.
The angelic choirs have never sounded so beautiful. That was Leo ….. making things
better wherever he was.
Leo Brown was a professional voice-over artist and radio personality also known as
“Gregg Lee”. He began working in radio in the early 70s at CJCB Radio in Cape
Breton. Leo moved to Halifax and worked at CHNS and then CJCH from the mid ’70s
until 1982. In 1982, Leo moved to Toronto and worked at 1050 CHUM and then CHUM
FM until 2003. While at CHUM he also worked for City TV. For many years after, he
worked at CHFI doing voice over including The Spirit of the Season that has played on
Christmas Day for the last several years. He was “one of the good guys in radio”. Leo’s
voice was heard all over the world. He did various voice over in South Africa, Italy,
Canada, etc. For a few years, Leo was a freelance commercial voice for Rogers Radio
Toronto. A number of those commercials won awards. Leo narrated “Hi-Fi- Salutes”, a
two-season series of interstitial television profiles on pioneering Canadian musicians,
disc jockeys, and record producers that aired on the Hi-Fi Channel. Some of these
episodes can still be seen on the Canadian Museum of Recorded Music and Culture –
cmrmc.ca. Click on ‘Stories’ in the menu bar. Leo was a member of ACTRA for over 40
years and knew he was fortunate to have worked in an industry he loved.
Personally and professionally, Leo will be remembered as loving, professional, kind,
generous, and charismatic with a great sense of humor and a unique talent for
impersonations. He was a mentor and confidant. Leo would brighten the day of friends
and strangers alike, always with a smile on his face. He was known as “Lend-a-hand
Leo”. Leo loved the outdoors, from downhill skiing to mountain biking and hiking.
He is survived by his loving wife, Kim Mayo; sisters-in-law, Willa (Gerry) McElhiney,
Margaret, Darleen, and Donna; brothers-in-law, Garry, Tom, and Jay; nieces, Jeri
McElhiney (Eric Rapaport), and Kerry (Daniel) Blais; nieces, Heather, Richelle and
Sherry; grand nephews, David, Mathis, and Nicholas; and many other loving family
members and friends.
Arrangements and cremation have been entrusted to J. Albert Walker Funeral Home,
Halifax, N.S. In keeping with Leo’s wishes, there will be no visitation or funeral service.
In lieu of flowers, donations can be made to the SPCA or a charity of one’s choice. To
