Katie Bierwagen, a beloved mother, grandmother, great-grandmother and great-great-grandmother, passed away peacefully on Wednesday, July 10, 2024, at St. Peter’s Hospital in Melville, SK, at the age of 95 years. Born on November 3, 1928, on a farm near Fenwood, SK, to Jack and Mary Gabel, Katie lived a life filled with love, faith and dedication to her family and community.
Katie is survived by her children, Judith (Ken) Westbrook, Gloria (Larry) Stefanuik, Wendy (David) Curtis and Daryl (Flory) Bierwagen; her grandchildren, Tracey, Raquel (Jim), Lisa (Blair), Jana (Cliff), Jenny, Tyler (Julie), Kerry (Sara) and Brandon; great-grandchildren Jenna (Matt), Gregory, Justin (Anna), Taylor (Bobby), Brooke, Hailey (Jesse), Olivia, Ryan, Triton, Chase, Ryder, Gavin, Toby and Alanna; and great-great-grandchild, Jane. She is also survived by sisters Helen and Rita, sisters-in-law Jeanette and Alice and brothers Karl, Ken (Betty) and Calvin (Ann).
She was predeceased by her husband, Oscar; son Randy; grandson Christopher; grandson-in-law Dennis; sisters Lillian (Mervin), Irene (Victor), Ruth (Kent), John, Wilfred (Kay) and Elmer; sister-in-law Denise; and brother-in-law Ron.
Throughout her life, Katie demonstrated a strong work ethic and commitment to her family. After attending Keningsberg School, she worked in Melville at the Cameo Cafe and as a housekeeper. On her 20th birthday in 1948, Katie married Oscar Bierwagen, and together they built a life on their farm north of Fenwood. Katie worked tirelessly alongside her husband, managing both household and farm duties.
Katie was known for her many talents and interests. She had a passion for fashion and sewing, creating clothes for herself and her daughters. She was an avid reader, and she excelled in cooking, frequently hosting Sunday dinners and preparing elaborate Christmas feasts for relatives.
Her strong faith and compassion were cornerstones of Katie’s character. She was a devoted member of her church, teaching Sunday School for decades and actively participating in prayer meetings and Bible studies. Katie supported her husband in his work with the Gideons and was known for her faithful prayers for her children and family.
Katie’s life was a testament to the power of faith, family and hard work. She will be deeply missed by all who knew and loved her, leaving behind a legacy of love and compassion that will continue to inspire future generations.
