CLARK, Rev. Dr. John Leland (1933-2024)
With profound sadness we announce to all whose lives he touched the passing of the Rev. Dr. John Leland Clark on July 7, 2024 in Windsor, Ontario in his 91st year.
Born August 17, 1933 in St. Louis, Missouri, the only child of Marian Boughner Clark (1986) and John Leland (Lyman) Clark (1963).
Beloved husband for 17 years to Janet Denise Finlay.
Loving father of Dr. Rebecca Lee Clark (Alan Mairson), Paul Lincoln Clark (Maura Kenneally), Sarah Elizabeth Clark, and stepdaughter soon-to-be Dr. Gwendoline Margaret Finlay Pepper-a.k.a. Greta (Cameron Kelso).
Proud grandfather of Emma Clark Mairson, Caleb Clark Mairson, Charles Elipio Clark, and Faith Marie Clark.
John will be missed by his sister-in-law Laurie Finlay Lamantia, husband Mark, and nephew Michael as well as his many friends.
He was a graduate of Kenyon College, Archon fraternity, in Gambier, Ohio, magna cum laude, with a Bachelor of Arts in Chemistry (1955). As an alumnus, he was recognized as a leading fundraiser for 50 years. A scholarship endowment has been set up in John’s name at Kenyon College, where you may consider giving a donation for ongoing recipients to learn at a place so near and dear to John’s heart. After Kenyon, John graduated from the Episcopal Theological School, Cambridge, Massachusetts with a Bachelor of Divinity (1958); and then the University of Cincinnati with a Masters of Community Planning and PhD in Environmental Health (1970).
John began his Episcopalian/Anglican 65-year ministry as Assistant Curate at St. John the Divine in Worthington, Ohio, continuing on as Chaplain at the University of Cincinnati in the 60s while Assistant Pastor at Calvary Church, Cincinnati. He was active in the civil rights movement, marching with Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr. and organizing the concert that brought Joan Baez to the University of Cincinnati. John was a lifelong Democrat.
Dr. Clark served as a Public Health Analyst at the Centres for Disease Control (CDC) in Atlanta, Georgia in the early 70s. He moved to Canada to work as Senior Statistician from 1974 to 2000 at the International Joint Commission’s (IJC) Great Lakes Regional Office in Windsor.
From 1975 to 2004, Dr. Clark was Honorary Assistant at All Saints’ Anglican Church, Windsor. One Christmas he appeared to the Church School children dressed as Santa Claus. They were convinced he was the real thing and chased him into the church offices where he took refuge. His Santa Claus like appearance disguised a biting sense of humor. John, when amused by a good story, could be reduced to silent laughter with tears streaming down his cheeks and a belly that shook. While predisposed to “stern face” pictures for posterity, it is those moments of gasping unbridled humour that we keep in our memory.
From 2004 to 2015, in retirement from the IJC, John was Priest-in-Charge at St. Michael & All Angels Anglican Church in Riverside, Windsor. He was known to be a more than competent preacher. His congregation were like family to him and in his last days, he was moved by their kind notes and visits.
John loved reading, especially books on American history, President Abraham Lincoln and the American Civil War. He insisted on sharing all that he learned with friends, colleagues, and family. He was known as Johnny Appleseed for the annual trunkful of Es County heirloom Winesap apples from Simpson Orchards that he delivered for many years to friends and doctors’ offices. He let show his romantic side as evidenced by his love of American musicals, motivating him to organize annual trips to the Stratford Festival with family and friends.
If you so desire, donations to St. Mary’s Memorial Fund, The Salvation Army, The Ontario Heart & Stroke Foundation or The John Leland Clark Scholarship, Kenyon College would be appreciated by the family.
The funeral service for the Rev. Dr. John Clark will be held at St. Mary’s Anglican Church (1983 Mary’s Gate St. Windsor ON. 519-969-5841) on July 26, 2024. Memorial visitation begins in the church at 10:00 am followed by the service at 11:00 with Archdeacon Jane Humphreys officiating. A reception will follow in St. Mary’s Hall.
