It is with profound sadness that we announce the passing of Dr. Mehdi Nematollahi at the age of 84 on
May 29, 2024, surrounded by his family.
Dr. Nematollahi’s life journey began from humble roots on October 5th, 1938, in Abadan. He was the
youngest member of his family with four older siblings. His family, who originally hailed from Shiraz,
valued education above all else. He earned his bachelor’s degree in engineering from the Abadan
Institute of Technology (AIT). Due to his hard work and determination, he was subsequently granted a
scholarship to pursue his studies further in England, where he obtained his master’s and Ph.D. from the
University of Manchester.
He carried his commitment to education throughout his life, instilling the same value in his children. Upon
returning to Iran, he taught at the Abadan Institute of Technology and later became the head of the
engineering department at this University. It was during his time as head of the engineering department,
that he met his future life partner, an engineer, who was attending one of the AIT workshops at the time.
This opened a 48 year chapter of a beautiful professional and personal partnership for the two of them.
Shortly after the Iranian revolution, he was transferred to Tehran, where he served as the Head of
international projects for oil refineries in Iran’s National Oil Company. Through his work, he travelled to a
vast number of European and Asian countries.
A proud Iranian, Dr Nematollahi deeply valued his cultural heritage. With a deep sense of national pride
and dedication to the oil industry, he worked tirelessly to improve and develop the sector. During the
eight-year war, he visited and repaired damaged oil refineries in war torn cities through the country.
His colleagues, including the director of the company, described Dr. Nematollahi as a noble, honest and
patriotic individual who always prioritized Iran’s interests and the oil industry above all else. He never
hesitated to endure hardships during difficult times. His guiding principle in life was, “Do what you like, be
what you like, but be the best at whatever you choose to do, go above and beyond.” This philosophy was
a cornerstone of his teachings to his children and all those that knew him.
He was later appointed as the project manager for building the Arak refinery as a joint venture with Japan.
After retiring from the oil ministry, he continued his distinguished career working with Petronas before
immigrating to Vancouver, Canada – a city he affectionately called the best place on Earth.
Dr. Nematollahi had a deep love and appreciation for Iranian poetry, calligraphy, miniatures, ceramics,
enamels, wood crafting and above all else Persian rugs. He even had a cherished collection of beautifully
woven rugs with historical significance. His knowledge of history, politics, geography, minute details of
gardening and farming, mathematics, physics, mechanics and his ingenious ability to evaluate and
determine risk and pitfalls of every decision were unparalleled. During his University years, he also
revelled in sports and was an excellent pool, poker, chess and backgammon player. With his keen mind,
he maintained a lifelong fascination with biomedical engineering. His last conversation with his son in the
hospital was about his admiration for this field, showcasing his enduring curiosity and intellectual vigour.
His sharp mind and memory remained unchanged even after suffering a stroke at the end of his life,
which doctors predicted would significantly impair his cognitive abilities. He defied all expectations and
maintained his sharp mind until his final moments. A true testament to his legacy as an extraordinary
engineer and an extraordinary intellect.
Despite his many achievements, Dr. Nematollahi did not measure life’s success by material wealth. He
valued life by the positive impact he could have on others and he instilled the same values in his children.
Throughout his life, he touched the lives of many, a fact evidenced by the outpouring of support and
celebration of his life from around the world after his passing.
Dr. Mehdi Nematollahi’s legacy is one of love, knowledge and an unwavering commitment to excellence.
His memory will continue to inspire and guide all who knew him. He will be deeply missed.
He is survived by his adoring wife Zohreh, of nearly 50 years, his doting daughter Mandana, a certified
periodontist from UCLA, his devoted son Alireza, an engineer and MBA, and Alireza’s caring partner
Mallory, an industrial designer.
