Leslie FUREDI Obituary
The family is saddened to announce the passing of beloved husband, father, and grandfather Leslie Furedi. He passed peacefully at the Elk Valley Regional Hospital with his loving wife by his side holding his hand.
Left to mourn are his wife, Donna; sons, Steven (Kim), John (Shelley), and Michael (Jules); grandsons, Braydon, and Connor; and brothers Tony and Jim (Vera). He was predeceased by his parents Miklos and Mary, and his sisters Louisa, Mary and Gizi.
Les was born in Lazi, Hungary. It was a hard life there, with the country still feeling the after effects of WWII, so he left and came to Canada in 1956 with his sister Mary and worked on his uncle’s farm in Manitoba. A young man full of mischief, he ran away multiple times to protest being forced to go to church and had to be returned by the police.
As an adult, Les would work as a painter in Vancouver, mill hand in Elko and coal miner in Sparwood, both underground and open pit. He supplemented his income with gambling, and was always lucky with the machines, Keno and scratch tickets, often winning thousands of dollars at a time.
He met Donna in Fernie in 1968, were married and had three boys together.
Anyone who knew Les would have heard him say, “Let me tell you a story.” And the stories he would tell! Les was a true character and a great talker.
In his later years Les moved to Sparwood and spent many afternoons in the mall, enjoying visiting with everyone he ran into. His health deteriorating, he moved to Rocky Mountain Village where he lived until his passing.
The family would like to thank the staff there for their care, and the staff at the hospital for their compassion during his final hours.
There will be no funeral at his request, just a small family gathering at a later date.
