Obituary
Taylor, Elsie May (nee Ruston)-Passed away peacefully at the Haldimand War Memorial Hospital on Wednesday June 12, 2024 just mere days before her 102nd birthday. Beloved wife of the late Charles Smith (1956) and the late William “Bill” Taylor (1984). Cherished mother of Glen Smith, Jerry (Bonnie) Smith, Charlene (Carlos) Arsenio, and mother-in-law of Grace Arnold. She is cherished by 16 grandchildren, 28 great-grandchildren and 12 great-great- grandchildren. Predeceased by her parents, Lindsay “Blair” and Florence “Hattie” (nee Bumstead) Ruston, her brothers Frank (Audrey) and Norm (Marion), and her children Betty (Bob) Cant, Ray (Sharon) Smith, Al Smith, and Doris (Ken) MacIver and her grandchild Joshua Arsenio. Lovingly remembered by five stepchildren and their large extended family.
Elsie was born in Meaford and worked alongside her family-owned sawmill in Cochrane, feeding up to 20 men a day at 11 years old. She was a tireless caregiver all her life, taking care of her ailing mother and grandmother as a young person, before working in a nursing home caring for the elderly. After marrying her love, Charles, she became a thoughtful and kind mother who expected her children to do their chores but didn’t do it for them if they forgot. As her children grew older, and she lost her husband, Elsie showed all the grit in the world. She kept her life and her home by working two or three jobs, eventually buying her first car in her forties and working at the Zippo Factory for 25 years.
When you live over 100 years, it is inevitable you will have heartbreak. Despite this, Elsie didn’t falter from her practice of loving her children and grandchildren for exactly who they were, never giving advice unless you asked. She always stayed true to herself and her walk with God and prayer. She certainly did not suffer any fools, but nothing made her happier than a surprise guest and her morning pot of tea with oatmeal. In her later years, she travelled several times with her special comrade “Bea” to Cuba and California and other parts of the US. Elsie enjoyed puzzles, listening to music, playing games on her iPad and getting her hands in the dirt at her final home in Lowbanks with her daughter and extended family. Elsie’s legacy of kindness and courage will never be forgotten by those who loved her.
A special thank you to Glenda for her excellent care of Elsie in her final months at home.
