George (Sakalauskas) Smith Obituary
With heavy hearts and great sadness, the family of George Peter Smith, beloved husband, father, brother, grandfather and great-grandfather, regret to announce his passing on June 4th, 2024, at the age of 79.
Born in North Sydney, May 10, 1945, George was the son of the late Joseph and Helen (Morrison) Sakalauskas.
George is survived by his wife of 58 years Leona Smith, his son George Smith (Gina Dolan) Halifax, daughters Veronica (Blair) Power, North Sydney, Nadine (Roger) Beaulne, his grandchildren Tyler Smith, Chelsea Smith (Tyler Forrest), Courtney Smith (Logan Aker), Makayla Power (Grahame Clarke), Marissa Power (Josh Johnston), and his one beautiful great-granddaughter Billie June Aker. Also surviving is his brother Johnny Sakalauskas (Toronto) and best friend Ernest Alfred (Halifax), sisters-in-law June Williams (Toronto) and Veronica Pearson (Oklahoma), brothers-in-law Eddy (Pam) Clarke (Halifax) and Rollie (Lynn) Clarke (North Sydney). He will also be deeply missed by numerous nieces and nephews.
Besides his parents, George was predeceased by his brothers Joe Sakalauskas, Carl Sakalauskas and sister Theresa Young. Also, brothers-in-law Francis (Bud) Clarke, Harry Clarke, Reg Clarke, Jack Williams, Keith Fraser and Harrol Pearson and sisters-in-law Betty Clarke and Rosemary Clarke.
George worked as a mechanic with Speedy Muffler in Toronto and Sydney for many years. He finished his career at Master Muffler in Sydney with his good friends Sandy and Jim and the boys.
The family would like to thank Dr. Amy Wambolt, the doctors and nurses at the Cape Breton Regional Hospital, the Palliative Care Team and EHS.
Visitation for George will be held from 5-7 pm, on Tuesday June 11, 2024, at W.J. Dooley Funeral Home, 107 Pleasant Street, North Sydney. A celebration of life will immediately follow in the funeral home Chapel. After the service there will be a reception at 485 Seaview Drive, North Sydney.
