MacDonald,
John A. «Alexander Joseph Rankin,» age 88, of Antigonish,
NS, passed away on May 13, 2024. at home.
Born on April
13, 1936, at Aberdeen Hospital in New Glasgow, he was a son of the
late Annie Fraser. John considered Mabou, NS, his hometown, and also
spoke fondly of Vulcan Avenue in Sydney, NS. A passionate
lover of Cape Breton fiddle music, John found joy and
comfort in the traditional sounds of his
heritage.
John, who
preferred to be called «Alex Rankin» by those close to him,
had a diverse career. He worked for the Gulf Oil company in Alberta
and later for the Cornish Arms in Antigonish. Known for his enthusiasm
for electronic gadgets, «Alex» was always eager to explore
the latest technology. He enjoyed socializing and was a familiar face
to the staff at the Antigonish Mall, where he spent many happy hours
chatting and building connections.
A devout
Roman Catholic and supporter of the Conservative Party of Canada, John
was deeply committed to his faith and political beliefs. In his later
years, «Alex» made his home in Antigonish, a town he
affectionately referred to as «Little Vatican City.» Known
for his love of strong tea, he would often emphasize his preference by
saying it was ready «only if you can stand on
it.»
In lieu of
flowers, donations may be made to The Gaelic College, reflecting
Alex’s generous spirit and love for Cape Breton
fiddle.

The family

A private
burial was held in St. Ninian Cemetery, Antigonish, with Deacon Art
Riley presiding.
