Agatha (Aggie) Thomson Obituary
The family of Aggie Thomson is saddened to announce her passing in Athabasca, Alberta on May 15, 2024 after a long life full of love and laughter.
Aggie, Mrs. Thomson, Agatha, Gramma Aggie, or Mom were the names that represented something different for all who knew her. Aggie will be dearly remembered by her children David (Renée) of Edmonton, Shelley of Calgary, Leanne (Fred) of Edmonton, and Kris (Kelly) of San Diego, her grandchildren Sarah, Matthew, Ella and Luke, her sister Elaine Patras, and in-laws Virginia Latoski, Hugh and Vickie Thomson, Connie Thomson, Dorothea and Alan Pankiw, George Thomson (Brenda) and many nieces and nephews. She will also be deeply missed by her many close friends.
Aggie was predeceased by her husband of 54 years, Arthur, her parents Michael and Pauline (née Stefaniuk) Latoski, and 16 siblings: Bill, Carl, Josie, Jessie, Lloyd, Pat, Mary, Ann, Joe, Helga, Paul, Andy, Liz, Eva, Irene, and Eddy.
Aggie was born in Wishart, Saskatchewan and was raised in a large loving Ukrainian farm family where laughter, music, faith and hard work were a way of life. She attended school in Wishart and Sacred Heart Academy in Yorkton, SK. After high school, she moved to Île-à-la-Crosse, SK to attend teachers’ college. Her first teaching job brought her to Frog Lake, Alberta where she met her future husband Art Thomson. After marrying, they moved on to teach in Fort Chipewyan, Edmonton, Maskwacis/Hobbema, and Wabasca. By 1968, with toddlers in tow, they finally settled on a picturesque farm near the hamlet of Meanook in the County of Athabasca. After having their fourth child in Athabasca, Aggie returned to teaching, this time at the Athabasca Elementary School.
While teaching, raising their busy family, farming, and finishing her University degree, Aggie still found time for gardening, tending her many flower beds, baking goods from scratch, making authentic Ukrainian food, and hosting gatherings. Christmas, fiddlers contest weekend, and impromptu harvest parties were big events for her. With her high levels of joy and energy, she loved to dance, curl in bonspiels, play fastball, act and sing in community theatre and music shows. She will be remembered for her highly comedic talents and MC skills that would have audiences roaring with laughter. She was a dedicated volunteer for Victim Services, Meals on Wheels, Meanook Community Association, Whispering Hills Country Music Association, Alberta Society of Fiddlers, and St. Gabriel’s Church.
We will remember Aggie for her smile, laughter, and gift of hospitality. Friends and neighbours frequently dropped in knowing that the coffee was always on, whether it was in Athabasca or in Yuma, Arizona where she and Art wintered after their retirement. We’ll miss her confident, joyful, humourous, mischievous, caring, nurturing, and strong-willed soul in our lives and community.
Friends may also pay their respects on Thursday, May 23, 2024 from 6:30 to 8:00 PM at the Athabasca Community Chapel.
Funeral services will be held on Friday, May 24, 2024 at St. Gabriel’s Roman Catholic Church in Athabasca at 11:00 AM. A luncheon will follow.
Father Paulson will be officiating the funeral. Cremation will take place after the funeral and interment will follow at a later date.
