Sheet Metal Workers (Local 30), recently received plaque award for 70 year member.
In 1944, Roy enlisted in the Rotary Youth Training Corp. The cadets were affiliated with 48th Highlanders and were trained by officers who were WW1 veterans from the 48th Highlanders. He enlisted at 15 years old, too young for active duty, overseas deployment but was trained at Camp Bolton the same as any active duty combat soldier of the war. He was ready to go when he would have come of age, but the war ended just before.
Starting in the ’80’s Roy was a member of the 48th Highlanders Regimental Colour Guard. In the 90’s he was with the 48th Highlanders of Canada Old Comrades Association Drill Team. They were in several parades (including the annual warriors day parade at the CNE). Under the leadership of his old friend and regimental colour guard leader Knobby Clarke, the RCG won several awards for their perfect uniforms and precision at parades and competitions. A distinction he was extremely proud of and would speak about with a great sense of personal and regimental satisfaction all his life. Roy was known by his nickname «Here comes practice».
Member of the Royal Canadian Legion for 40 years.
Masons Honorary Member.
Roy was born and lived in Toronto, moving to Cobourg after retirement. When younger he enjoyed playing hockey and guitar, and coaching girls hockey. Later he enjoyed working with and dedicating time to the organizations he belonged to.
Forever in our hearts.
Being a modest and humble man, Roy did not want any funeral. At his request, Roy’s cremated remains will be interred at a later date at Resthaven Memorial Gardens.
If desired donations can be made to Heart and Stroke Foundation or The War Amps.
