Obituary
Leona Rowena (Sears) Larkin
It is with profound sadness that the Larkin family says goodbye to their matriarch, Leona Larkin, who went home to be with her Lord and Saviour on February 9, 2023, at the age of 95. Surrounded by her loving family, she was strong and thinking of others until the very end. In her final days and even hours, Momma shared beautiful smiles and cherished moments as she said goodbye to all, even those who lived far away and could not be there. Leona was born on July 5th, 1927, in Shag Harbour, the daughter of the late Mervin and Elizabeth “Lizzie” (Smith) Sears. Before her marriage and after her children were in school, she taught in a classroom including primary to grade 10. Following her teaching career, she was a secretary and bookkeeper until she retired. As her legacy, she leaves behind to grieve her loss, her children, Sharon (Brian) Wentzell, Roger (Simone) Larkin, Leona Mae (Wayne) Devine, Elizabeth “Libby” (George) Amirault and Darlene (Gregory) Nickerson; eleven grandchildren, Sherry (Kevin) Nickerson, Travis (Nicole) Devine, Kara (Stefan) Maliszewski, Janna (David) Ferreira, Mandy (Jeff) Coyle, Aimee (Jeff) Hodder, Nicholas (Serena) Nickerson, Chad (Jennifer) Amirault, Charissa (Adam) Trudeau, Kyle (Pamela) Amirault, Mitchell (Natasha) Larkin, 23 great-grandchildren, 6 great-great-grandchildren, one step great-great-grandson, and loving sister Juanita Ball. She was predeceased by her husband and true love, Otis Clifford Larkin; her sister, Mabel Banks; her brother, Wilbert Sears; and her brother-in -laws, Lawrence Banks and Gerald Ball. She was lovingly known to her family and community as ‘Nannie Lonie’. There was always a full house, and Nannie made sure everyone was well fed. She enjoyed doing for others, knitting, and going for drives with Clifford. Momma was our biggest supporter and prayer warrior. Leona volunteered most of her life, even while bringing up five children. She was the secretary/ treasurer of the Sunday School, the church clerk at the Shag Harbour United Baptist Church, a member of the Muriel Bent Missionary Society, member and then President of the Do for Others Club, member of Canadian Red Cross Society, member of the Chapel Hill Historical Society, and an Honorary member of Gideon’s. For many years, Leona was also responsible for the Annual Fund-Raising Event for the Canadian Diabetes Association. The entire family are forever grateful to the staff at Bayside Home for their loving care over the last 9 years. The family would also like to offer their sincerest gratitude to the healthcare professionals at both Shelburne and Yarmouth hospitals for providing Momma with the care and compassion needed to ensure she passed peacefully. There will be a visitation held, Saturday, February 11th, 6-8pm, at the H.M. Huskilson’s Memorial Chapel, Barrington. Service will be held at Calvary Baptist Church, Woods Harbour, Sunday, February 12th at 1pm, Pastor Phil Williams and Rev. Elizabeth (Libby) Amirault officiating. Internment and committal at Old Farm Cemetery in Upper Shag Harbour with immediate family present. Reception to follow the service at the Calvary Baptist Church Vestry. Donations may be made to the Juvenile Diabetes Association, ShareWord Global (Gideons), or to a charity of your choice.
