Obituary
We celebrate today the life and loss of Olive Mary Hedges who lived and loved her 97 years in the warmth of family and community. Olive was a strong, brave woman of faith.
The youngest of 3 children born to Bernice and Percy Westbrook in 1927 – the baby with 2 older protective brothers, she grew up in a close knit family surrounded by love. After high school she attended business college and started to work at Bell. Shortly thereafter, Olive met Garnet Hedges and they were married in September 1950. They welcomed their daughter, Anne in 1953. Life was very full but tragedy struck when Garnet’s neurological health concerns arose and he was chronically ill with ALS until his death in 1977. During this time Olive studied to become a medical secretary so that she could work at the hospital where her husband was being cared for. Later she also studied for a legal secretarial certificate and moved to England for 18 months after Garnet’s death to work as a legal secretary and to explore the country where her father Percy was born and raised.
Returning from England, Olive worked for the Medical Director of Rehabilitation at Toronto General Hospital for many years until her retirement.
The arrival of her grandchildren, James and Heather enriched her life with a new role as Nana and with her move to Oakville Nana was never very far away! She filled her retirement with family, travel and the church community of Knox Oakville.
Olive enjoyed travel, especially cruises, an experience she first shared with her cousin, Anne and her husband Perry and later with her daughter and grand daughter. She felt travel opened the horizons of your world and taught you much about life.
In 2019, with the arrival of Lyle, Olive embraced the joys of being GiGi (Great Grandmother)! She would tell him that she loved him ‘a bushel and a peck’!
Olive loved music and her classical music station accompanied her daily life from morning til night!
In her last few years, Olive was challenged by Alzheimers and Dementia. We witnessed the gradual loss of her memory and her struggle to retain her identity and live her life with the grace and dignity that marked her earlier life. Since September 2022, Olive needed the skills and caring of the Sunrise (Burlington) Home to help us meet her needs.
Her memory and her wisdom lives on in the hearts of her daughter, Anne, her grandson James (Katie), granddaughter Heather (Allan), great grandson Lyle, dear friend Diana and many more family and friends.
A celebration of life will be held on Thursday, May 9 at 1:00 pm at Knox Presbyterian Church, 89 Dunn Street, Oakville.
Reception to follow at the church.
