After a long and valiant feat of endurance with his health these last few years, Murry Lloyd Jeffery had an impromptu but peaceful passing surrounded by his family on Friday May 3, 2024 in his 81st year. Born May 10, 1943, he was the fourth child of Odetta Geneva (Kellestine) and John Axford Jeffery. He leaves behind his loving wife and best friend Marylee (James) along with his remaining siblings: brother Jack & wife JoAnn Jeffery, Sister Ann & husband Mac Lilley and brother Tom Jeffery. Predeceased by brothers George and Warren, his wife Mary and first born daughter Valy. Murry was a very proud father and step-father to his children Ed & Lisa Jeffery, Carrie Jeffery & Dave Campbell, Donna & Barry Lynam, Amy & Mark Watson, Daniel Jeffery, Candace & Quincy Rose, and Carina & Jeff Boston. He was known uniquely not as Grandpa but rather ‘Jinky’ to his most beloved grandchildren and great-grandchildren: Tylor & Ashley Jeffery and their children Jemma, Max and Andrew; Julia Grover & Justin Jones and their children Teagan and Trevor; Carly & Corey Wheatcroft and daughter Aurora; Zachary Jeffery & Angela Donaldson and children Kielan, Piper and Georgia May; Bryan Lynam & Jorie Prow and son Bryce; Corbin Lynam & Jamie Lucas; Emma and Erin Watson; Ava and Marcas Boston; Madison McQuiggan & Brett Nichols and son Noah; and Mackenzie McQuiggan & Cole Nicholson. He was loved by his in laws Bob & Betty Bartholomew as well as Gale Jeffery. Uncle Murry was a frequently declared favourite to so so so many nieces and nephews (over 60?) of both Mary’s family and his own brother and sister’s children. He was admired as a father figure to anyone who saw him as such, be it acquaintances such as Calvin Carrothers or anyone who needed a good role model.
Big Mur was a gentle giant born along a backdrop of spring lambs hardened in their pasture with 10 inches from a rare May snow. He was a character and lived full out in a way that made great stories throughout his life and in retirement he loved being at his summer home at Enchanted Hideaway looking at Lake Erie with his wife Marylee. He could be found cutting grass and riding his golf cart, fishing and tinkering with smoked meats, making pickles or all kinds of engineering feats that made him known as a bit of a McGyver. Dan used to love hanging out with him in the garage as just a young child as McGyvering was indeed pretty interesting and cool. He was a woodsman and had cleared brush, processed both firewood and lumber, and even tapped trees and made maple syrup with his grandkids. His favourite tree was a Tamarack and he was at home in the woods.
His family was his Crown Jewel. He was a constant and steady provider of support, advice and he never said goodbye without including an “I love you.” He stayed strong in his last years to be there for his family even then.
He was a bit of a deep thinker and could be quiet but make no mistake, he had a great sense of humour, loved to laugh and a good gag. He had a razor sharp wit and the best was his one finger salute, his most unique Murryism. He was serious about smaller details like his involvement in building cub cars and sharing a late night Harvey’s burger at the Tilsonburg DriveThru.
He loved to drive slow down the back roads with his left arm hanging out the window taking life easy, more like the pace of a bygone era.
He was the Ekfrid Drainage Superintendent and a heavy equipment operator, the likes of which the world may never see again. He coached minor hockey in Glencoe and the Appin A’s men’s fastball team. He will be missed by his construction family as well as the community of Appin and the community of friends at the lake.
The world has lost a living legend. He will live on through his tales that will be talked about forever. He was LOVED.
A visitation will be held at Van Heck Funeral Home 172 Symes Street, Glencoe on Friday May 10th between 1 pm and 5 pm at 172 Symes Street, Glencoe. Donations can be made to Four Counties Heath Services Foundation to whom the family is eternally grateful.
A private service will be held at another time.
