GERGICH, Frank (December 26, 1942 – April 28, 2024)
The Toronto Maple Leafs have lost their biggest fan. We are heartbroken to share the news that Frank Gergich, from Tillsonburg, Ontario, died on Sunday, April 28, 2024, surrounded by his family at Victoria Hospital (LHSC) in London, Ontario. He was 81 years old. He was diagnosed in 2015 with multiple myeloma, a rare blood cancer. He took this challenging diagnosis in stride, never complaining and not letting it define him.
His doctors and nurses referred to him as a success story. We know this success was also possible because of his wife Sandra, who used her skills and knowledge as a Registered Nurse (RN) to support him. She can now try to retire from the profession.
Frank was married to the love of his life, Sandra (Beaton) for 52 years. They met at the Pendulum Club in London, Ontario when Frank was driving his beloved 1968 GTX. They made their home in Tillsonburg where they raised their five children, Stephen Gergich (Nicole Martin), Christine Gergich (Rob O’Brien), Susannah Gergich (Joel Melton), Patricia Gergich (Chris Spohn), and Anita Gergich (Eric Matthews).
Born on December 26, 1942 in Peresznye, Hungary to Frank Gergich (1994) and Maria (Deutsch) (2004) and brother to Mary Dobovits. At 13 years old, Frank came to Canada with his family during the 1956 Hungarian Revolution as a refugee. He was a very hard worker, spending more than 40 years as a proud employee of Livingston Industries (TDS Automotive).
Frank was a devoted Papa who loved his four grandchildren, Angus & Charlotte Melton, and Ceili Gergich & Eszter (Essie) O’Brien. He was happiest with them cuddled in his arms or kicking the soccer ball around the backyard.
Frank was all about family. His ultimate goal was to ensure his children had strong family connections. This meant jumping in the van every August to drive to Cape Breton Island to visit all of the Beaton and Rankin families. He made the road trip over 50 times to Mabou and we had hoped to make it again with him this summer. Frank loved driving out East and we believe it reminded him so much of his childhood in the European countryside. He even became an “Honorary Cape Bretoner” in 1994.
Frank will be greatly missed by his sister-in-laws and brother-in-laws, Margo (Jim) Beaton, Allan (Pat) Beaton, Helen-Anne (Wayne) Bassani, Miriam (George) Gillis, Lorraine Beaton, Pat Beaton, Norman (Eileen) Beaton, Kevin (Jayne) Beaton and Gordon Toole. Frank was a loving Uncle to many nieces and nephews across Canada. He will also be missed by Marianne (Earl) Bartlett and family, Elizabeth & Charles Dobovits and Cecilia (Zoltan) Lamperth and family. He will be remembered by all of his family in Hungary.
A big thanks to Dr. Martha Louzada (and her team at LHSC) who gave Frank the best care, and always had time to talk soccer. For nine years, Frank and his family participated in the Multiple Myeloma Walk of Champions, raising critical funds to support cancer research.
We will remember Frank in the kitchen stirring a big pot of goulash, sitting at the end of the dining room table deep in conversation, watching his Leafs with a beer in hand, and wearing red as a proud Canadian.
One of our Dad’s favourite songs by Walter Ostenak was “In Heaven there is no beer.”
“In Heaven there is no beer
That’s why we drink it here
And when we’re gone from here
All our friends will be drinking that beer”
We hope you’re enjoying one up there. Cheers to you Dad! Egészségére!
Nyugodjon békében
