Joseph Mullins Obituary
Joseph Mullins passed away peacefully at the Sir Thomas Roddick Hospital in Stephenville, NL on March 29, 2024 at the age of 90 years.
Joe was born June 18, 1933, in Stephenville and will be forever remembered as a loving son, brother, nephew, uncle and friend. Joe worked for a number of his earlier years driving trucks on the American base and also in Labrador. Later, he spent many years working on the Irving oil tankers until he had to leave due to a work accident. He was a fine gentleman who kept to himself and was content with a life of solitude. Joe would entertain his family and friends with funny, interesting stories of his youthful days on the base, his furloughs and life at sea. He was a very intelligent man with self taught knowledge through his avid love of reading. Joe could explain how any part of a vehicle worked; enjoyed tinkering with electronics; and having conversations on global current affairs.
Joe was raised by his aunts Mary Joe and Adeline who adored him. He would later stay in Stephenville Crossing with his mother, sister Anne, brother in law Melvin, and three nephews while on leave during his sailing years. It was a full house but his nephews loved having their Uncle Joe stay with them – especially when he told colorful stories and frequently slipped them money. After he stopped working, Joe lived for over 30 years at the Bay St. George Senior Cottages. Due to health concerns, he would spend the last year of his life at the Silverwood Manor in Kippens.
Thank you to his brother in law Melvin and his nephew Jon who were always there for him after the passing of his sister Anne. Melvin and Jon were there to help and support Joe with his transition into assisted living. Joe could always count on them for visits, chats, medical appointments, haircuts, paperwork and weekly drives to the mall to get lotto tickets, pepsi, magazines, sour cream and onion rings and a general look around.
Left to mourn with beautiful and loving memories are: his brother in law Melvin: his three nephews: Tony (Lisa), Jon (Jill) and Don; his grand nephews and nieces; and his cousins and friends.
Joe is predeceased by: his mother Catherine (Thomas) White of Stephenville; his sister Anne of Stephenville Crossing; and his aunts: Mary Joe White of Stephenville and Adeline Alexander of Stephenville.
Thank you to the staff of the Silverwood Manor in Kippens for your love and compassion and for taking such great care of Joe in the last year of his life.
Also, a special thank you to the doctors, nurse practitioner and staff of the Sir Thomas Roddick Hospital for their compassion and care during Joe’s final days.
A visitation will take place on Wednesday, April 3rd from 7:00-9:00 PM at Russell’s Funeral Home, Stephenville. The funeral service will be held on Thursday, April 4th at 10:00 AM from Russell’s Funeral Home Chapel, Stephenville. Interment to follow at Hillside Interfaith Cemetery. As expressions of sympathy, in lieu of flowers, donations may be made to a charity of your choice.
