Obituary of Maureen Elaine Lamond
July 16, 1932 – Calgary, Alberta
March 24, 2024 – Cochrane, Alberta
It is with profound sadness that we announce the death of Maureen Lamond on Sunday, March 24, 2024, just after sunrise at the age of 91 years. Maureen was surrounded by her family; her son Robert was holding her hand when she drifted away. Maureen had been living in the shadow of dementia for some time and it is with relief that the shadow is now gone.
Maureen was predeceased by her beloved Don, who went to get everything ready for her on Sunday, February 25, 2024. Maureen and Don had been together for over 70 years. She was loved and admired by her children, Sharon Chynoweth (Peter) of Cochrane, AB, and Robert Lamond (Valerie) of Niagara-on-the-Lake, ON. Maureen was the best Nana to her grandchildren, Stephen Christie (Crystal), Heather Black (Jeff), and Andrea D’Angelo (Isaac); and she was blessed to be Great-Nana to her great-grandchildren, Tekerra, Lucas, and Jaxson Christie, and Kieran Black. Maureen is also survived by her nieces and nephew, and many valued long-time friends.
Maureen was a very proud Calgarian. Until her recent move to Bethany Cochrane, she lived her whole life within five kilometers of her birth home in the Mount Royal district. She cared deeply for her family and her friendships. Maureen worked for London Life Insurance until Sharon was born and then she assumed the full-time role of motherhood and homemaker with joy and dedication. Maureen loved her church – especially the hymns of her faith. She was a long-time member of Wesley United Church and then Knox Presbyterian Church.
Maureen was a Life Member of the Alberta Handicraft Guild. She loved church work, quilting, cross-stitching, reading (Maeve Binchy and Jan Caron), playing Five Crowns and Wizard, camping, golfing, and curling. While being at home was her comfort, she also loved to travel with Don, especially to Maui. She loved the Calgary Stampeders and the CFL, prided herself in being able to say the alphabet backward, and ensured her children and grands could do the same. She loved hot chocolate, chocolate pudding, and made the world’s best pie pastry.
Together with Don, she loved having her children, grands, and great-grands around as much as possible, early on to participate in their activities by cheering from the sidelines, and latterly to have them visit and “just be”. Above all else, Maureen was there for Don. She supported him in Scouting and all his volunteering, she made sure he followed doctor’s orders through several illnesses, and she simply loved being by his side as his partner and best friend.
Maureen, you will be in our hearts forever.
Our heartfelt thanks go to the staff of the Manor Village Garrison Woods in Calgary for over a decade of care and friendship. Our immense gratitude goes to the staff at Bethany Cochrane for their love, kindness, and compassionate care of Maureen and her family, especially in the last month.
Funeral Services will be held at Knox Presbyterian Church (3704 – 37th Street S.W., Calgary, AB) on Saturday, March 30, 2024, at 11:00 a.m.
