Stewart Arthur Cochrane, a longtime resident of Wallaceburg passed away peacefully at Fairfield Park Long Term Care on Sunday, March 10, 2024 at the age of 89. Stewart has now been reunited with his beloved wife Ann (2018) and will be remembered dearly by his son John and wife Deb as well as his grandchildren Tyler (fiancé Hailey), Madison and Trevor. Stewart was the only son of the late Art and Helen Cochrane.
Stew was the son of a farming family in the GTA (Greater Tupperville Area) but a farmer he wasn’t. Once given the opportunity he raced for the bright lights and white-collar world of Wallaceburg!
He worked at the TD Bank, Wallaceburg Brass, Mac Construction and retired from Elric Contractors enjoying a successful career in Finance and Operations.
Stew was involved in the Wallaceburg community and was a Jaycee for many years and a former President of the Jaycees. He was a member of the Knights of Columbus and participated in many of their fund-raising initiatives. Stew was also an active member of the Finance Committee and Building Committee for Our Lady Help of Christians Parish.
Stew loved to travel with Ann and went on many trips with friends and family whether it be a road trip to check out the fall colours or to England and Europe.
You would always find Stew with a camera in his hand snapping pictures of family, friends, and trip highlights. Stew also became a very proficient videographer, and his narration was legendary.
During retirement, he learned to golf and to curl and loved the 19th hole and Briar patch! He loved to have fun and his laughter became infectious to the people around him.
He was an early pioneer on how to have fun at your son’s out of town sporting events that required overnight hotel stays. If you needed someone to BBQ at a gathering or be a bartender on a bus trip to the Pontiac Silverdome, Stew was your guy. He never knew the score when he came home as it was all about the comradery and making sure everyone had a good time.
He loved his Friday afternoon visits to the Legion where the stories were tall and the facts were not important.
Stew loved his trips to Burlington to be with his grandkids and spend time with family. As the trips became fewer in later years, he would often refer to the Burlington trips as their mini vacation.
The one thing that continues to shine through is Stew’s love and never wavering support for his wife Ann. As Ann’s health worsened Stew was always by her side making endless daily trips to Chatham while in the hospital and in Long Term Care. Although Covid and advanced dementia had significant impact on Stew. The staff and support workers at Fairfield Park would often say you could still see the twinkle in his eye when there was fun to be had. They don’t make them like Stew anymore!
Stewart will be laid to rest during a private ceremony at Riverview Cemetery under the care of the Haycock-Cavanagh Funeral Home, 409 Nelson Street in Wallaceburg (519-627-3231). Family and friends are invited to come celebrate his life with food and drink at the Wallaceburg Royal Canadian Legion, Branch 18 on Saturday, May 11, 2024 from 11-2pm. If you wish to make a donation in Stewart’s memory, please consider the Alzheimer Society or Wallaceburg RCL Branch 18.
