Obituary of John Newsome Gibson
John Gibson, a beloved father, grandfather, and great-grandfather, passed away peacefully at the St. Boniface Hospital on March 2, 2024, at the remarkable age of 98. He will be deeply missed by his family and friends.
Born on a farm in Gunton, Manitoba in 1925, John’s childhood was filled with carefree play and exploration, often with his younger brother Alistair by his side. He developed a lifelong passion for hard work, instilled in him by his parents, Queenie and James Gibson. John’s love for music blossomed under the guidance of his mother, and he proudly sang with the Winnipeg Boy’s Choir. As a King’s Scout, he embodied the values of leadership and service.
John’s professional journey began at Standard Aero Engine in the Accessories Overhaul Department. However, it was his time at CKY radio, which later became CBC’s CBW, that defined his career. In 1952, he was part of the team that initiated the first broadcast of CBC TV, and he played a pivotal role in the installation and launch of CBWT/CBC in Winnipeg in 1954. His dedication and expertise earned him the position of Director of Technical Operations, where he thrived until his retirement in 1983 from the Regional Engineering Department designing studios.
Beyond his professional achievements, John was a loving husband. He married Joane Aitken in 1948, and together they built a life filled with love and fond memories. After Joane’s passing, John found a second love with Elizabeth Froberg from Waconia, Minnesota. They embarked on countless adventures, including trips to Alaska and Italy, creating unforgettable memories together.
John’s dedication to his family was unwavering. He cherished his role as a father, grandfather, and great- grandfather, leaving behind a legacy of love and generosity. Mere weeks before his passing, John was still playing games and building legos on the floor with his great-grandson. He is survived by many nieces and nephews and was particularly close to his niece Margaret, with whom he kept in regular contact. His family, including his son David, daughter-in-law Joanne, grandson Danny, his wife Dominique, and great- grandsons, Nash and Bodhi, will forever hold his memory close to their hearts.
John grew up on Stiles Street and attended Wolseley, Issac Brock and Gordon Bell High School. During his adult life he lived in Fort Garry and then Charleswood. After his retirement, John moved permanently to Victoria Beach, Manitoba, where he had visited, rented, and owned cottages since 1940. He adored the beauty and serenity of the beach and made many lasting friendships and memories in this special place.
John was an active member of the East Beaches Social Scene, where he enjoyed participating in exercise classes, carpet bowling, bingo, and monthly dinner dances. He also valued his time as a winter Texan, continuing his visits for many years. In his final years, John resided at Riverwood Square in Winnipeg, where he received exceptional care and support from the staff.
The family would like to express their heartfelt gratitude to the Riverwood staff for their unwavering support and kindness. They would also like to extend their appreciation to the emergency department staff at St. Boniface Hospital for their professionalism and empathy during John’s last days.
John’s legacy will be remembered for generations to come. His generosity and love touched the lives of his family and all those who had the privilege of knowing him.
In accordance with John’s wishes, cremation has taken place and there will be no funeral. Instead, a Celebration of Life will be held this summer to honour the remarkable journey of John Gibson.
In lieu of flowers, the family kindly requests donations to be made to the East Beaches Social Scene, a cause that was close to John’s heart.
May John’s soul find eternal peace, and may his memory be a source of comfort and inspiration to all who knew him.
