Dr. Karen Margaret Davison Wood, PhD, August 16,1942—February 26, 2024.
After 30 years of living with chronic pain, Karen Davison Wood died at Glengarry Memorial Hospital from complications due to Rheumatoid Arthritis and Parkinson’s Disease. Her family is at peace knowing she’s now at rest.
Karen was the wife and intellectual/travel soulmate to Don Wood for 60 years, dear sister to Ian (Doreen), badass feminist mother to Heather (Kurt) and Natalie (David) and generous grandmother to Emma (Ben) and Elliot, true and dear friend to many, and a teacher and mentor to countless others. In her understated, consistent, and deeply committed way, Karen made a significant impact on all those who crossed paths with her.
Karen was a perpetual student and teacher. A voracious learner, mentor, traveller, and volunteer throughout her life, Karen believed in people and brought the best out of everyone. Her cackling laugh was loud and infectious. She was a very good listener and even better at advice-giving. As a young wife and mother, Karen worked and studied her way to a BA, MA, and PhD, becoming an academic in Montreal at Sir George Williams University (now Concordia) and then at Marianopolis College (1973-2006).
She was a woman of integrity, who held strong beliefs about contributing to the world around her. Karen had a long-lasting commitment to her adopted home of Glengarry County; she was honoured as North Glengarry’s Citizen of the Year in 2015 and recognized for her service with the Arts, Culture, and Heritage Committee of North Glengarry, 1998-2022.
A profoundly, but eclectically and ecumenically spiritual person, completing the 800 km El Camino de Santiago pilgrimage with her dear friend, Myra Smith, was one of Karen’s most treasured accomplishments. The best way to honour Karen is to read a book by a Canadian author (preferably a woman), have a glass of Prosecco, listen to Andrea Bocelli, Leonard Cohen, or any opera, and plan a trip to a meaningful destination—preferably Venice. In lieu of flowers, donations can be made to the Glengarry Pioneer Museum (glengarrypioneermuseum.ca), Child Haven International (childhaven.ca), or the Madagascar School Project (madagascarschoolproject.com). A celebration of life is being planned for the spring, details to be announced.
Funeral arrangements under the care and direction of the Munro & Morris Funeral Homes Ltd., 114 Main St. South, Alexandria (613-525-2772). As a Memorial to Karen a tree will be planted in a memory woods. A tree grows-memories live. Condolences may be made online at www.munromorris.com.
