Obituary
Smith, Carl Douglas – 88, passed peacefully with family at his side at The Yarmouth Regional Hospital on February 28, 2024. Carl was born the youngest son of Charles Elroy and Norma Belle (Penney) Smith in Doctor’s Cove on February 5, 1936. Carl considered himself blessed to have spent his working life enjoying and serving people. He began as a certified mechanic and valued his experiences working at Smith & Watt and T.L. Swaine in Barrington Passage. Subsequently, Carl served his community as an insurance agent with Metropolitan Life. After a successful career in life insurance, Carl became the owner and operator of the Imperial Oil/ Esso Plant in Barrington Passage. Following this, Carl deeply enjoyed his time serving as Office Manager for G. David Eldridge Law in Barrington. Later, Carl returned to serving community through his own agency as an automobile and house insurance broker. Carl had many hobbies and passions in life. He loved anything to do with carpentry and construction, having built two homes and cottages for his family to enjoy. His construction and woodworking abilities naturally took him into helping his children and grandchildren with all their construction or renovation projects. One of Carl’s greatest fascinations in life was with airplanes and flying. He was always grateful for the opportunity he had to attend flight school from which he acquired the ability to perform a solo flight. Carl was also interested in writing and he fashioned several books and many poems for his family and friends to enjoy. Carl’s deepest passion in life was his relationship with Jesus. His faith was evidenced, not by words alone, but by his character and the manner in which he treated everyone around him with dignity, goodness, generosity, and care. Carl was a true gentleman. As a life-long member of Doctor’s Cove Baptist Church, Carl was devoted to his faith-community, serving as a Deacon, Trustee, Treasurer, Gideon, and Teacher. He was subsequently a member of South Side Baptist Church. Carl’s genuine faith in God was one of his most abiding and notable qualities. Next to God, the deepest love of Carl’s life was the wife of his youth, “Honey”, and his “four girls”. He was a man who would go to any extent to love, protect, and care for his family. Carl was always active and present, in ways too deep for words, for every generation of his family as they came along. He was a “Dad” and “Pa” second to none. He always made Christmas extra special for those he loved and was a “Santa” without equal. Carl lived his life in a way which reminds us of that: “It’s not what you take with you when you go, but what you leave behind.” And, he has left us with so many good times and fond family memories. Carl is survived by his loving wife of sixty-six years, Helen, and his four daughters: Cheryl (Maynard), Krista (Kevin), Carla (Shaun), and Karen (Lyndon), and by his nine grandchildren: Benji (Lynell), Nathan (Shanda), Jennie (Brandon), Amanda (Craig), Carissa (Nico), Amelia (Josh), Jessica (Cody), Tyler (Hilary), Shelby, and by his fifteen great-grandchildren: Kellsie, Katelyn, Breanne, Ellie, Kale, Forrest, Claire, Flint, Briar, Violet, Summer, Callie, Owen, Sophia, and Piper, and by his two sister-in-laws: Hilda Smith and Sylvia Crowell, and by very special nieces and nephews. Besides his parents, Carl was predeceased by his two brothers, Stanley and Ronald. Family flowers only. No Visitation by request. The funeral service will be held at 2pm Friday, March 8th at the H.M. Huskilson’s Memorial Chapel, Barrington. Donations can be made to South Side Baptist Church, Doctor’s Cove Cemetery, The People’s Gospel Hour, or to charity of choice. Online condolences may be sent to huskilson@ns.aliantzinc.ca or you may sign the guest book at www.huskilson.net
