Brian Reid Obituary
Brian Reid
September 2nd, 1934 – February 17, 2024
We are saddened to share the news that Brian Reid passed away at Stratford General Hospital Saturday night, surrounded by family. A caring and generous father and grandfather, Brian supported and cared for his family in many ways throughout his life. He is survived by son David (Mary Bender), daughter Jennifer (Steve Viau), daughter Susanna, and grandchildren John, Lilly, Cameron, Elijah, and Owen.
Brian dedicated his life to social justice issues, including Hamilton Wentworth Nonsmokers Rights Association, Dundas Heritage Association, Hamilton Chapter of the United Nations Association, and Hamilton Environmentalist of the Year. He was awarded a Lifetime Achievement award for Environmentalist of the Year for his dedicated work in the environmental and nonsmokers rights movement, where Brian was in the vanguard before it was popular. Brian was a member of the First Unitarian Church of Hamilton, former president of the Canadian Unitarian Council, and founding member of the Stratford Unitarians. Brian loved spending summers with his Lunny family at Lake of the Woods, having grown up in Kenora. He and his wife Margaret built a cottage on Lunny’s Island, and they enjoyed many summers together there before Margaret passed away in 2003. Brian subsequently had a long-term relationship with Pat Morris, and they spent many summers together at the lake. Professionally, Brian was a civil engineer, a career which prompted him to move to Hamilton to work at Stelco. Hamilton is where he first crossed paths with Margaret. In 1973, he started working at Mohawk College, teaching engineering and estimating. He loved curling and was a dedicated Blue Jays fan. He was a talented amateur artist, a strong bridge player, and extremely knowledgeable about politics and current events. He was enthusiastic about the potential of the NDP.
Brian was predeceased by his parents Agnes Elizabeth Reid and Cecil James Reid, and his sister Frances Marion Reid. He was also predeceased by his wife of 35 years, Margaret Ann Stafford Johnston Reid, with whom he had a long and happy marriage.
Friends and family are invited to Brian’s visitation on Wednesday, February 21, 2024 from 6 -8 p.m. at the W. G. Young Funeral Home, 430 Huron St, Stratford, ON.
