Arthur Bruce «Art» Matthews – 90, Truro,
passed away peacefully, with family by his side, on Saturday, February
17, 2024. Born in Stewiacke, he was a son of the late Thomas
and Irene (Fisher) Matthews.
Art graduated from Stewiacke High School in 1951 and from
Success Business College in 1952. Although he had begun his career in
accounting, in 1955 he moved into the insurance industry at Central
Agencies in Truro. He continued his career at Commercial Union in
Montreal, and in 1960 he joined Marsh Adjustment Bureau in Halifax. He
moved to Truro in 1963, and retired as Vice President of Marsh
Adjustment Bureau in January 1994.
Art was past president of the Truro Kinsmen, K-40 Club and
the Atlantic Region of the Canadian Independent Adjuster Conference.
He was a member of the Conservative Party of Canada. Art enjoyed
woodworking, gardening, playing bridge and spending time at the
cottage in Bayhead. His favorite memories of retirement were his
summers spent at the cottage. In recent years, Art was an active
member of the Truro Duplicate Bridge Club.
Art will be missed dearly by his daughter, Brenda (Bruce)
Harvey, Valley; grandchildren, Amanda (Rob) Reid, Drayton Valley,
Alberta; Alex (Sheena Teed) Harvey, Borden, Ontario; Stephanie
(Taylor) MacArthur, Hilden; great grandsons, Nicolas and Jaxon
MacArthur and Eric Harvey; son, David (Meaghan) Raymond,
Smith’s Cove, Digby County. He will be missed by
brothers, Fred (Irene), Malagash; Les, Stewiacke; sisters, Carolyn Van
der Leest, Truro; Cheryl (Eric) Manzar, Lake George; Mary Crowe,
Onslow Mountain; many nieces and nephews. He will also be missed by
his dear friend, Michelle Thomas, Longueil, Quebec. Along with his
parents, he was predeceased by his wife of 62 years, Dorothy
(DeLoughry); brothers, John, Harold, Clint, Walter; sisters, Ruth,
Avis, Lois.
Thank you to Dr. Henderson and the staff in the Palliative
Care Unit at Colchester East Hants Health Centre. Special
thanks to Rebecca and Viraji for your support and
compassion.
Arrangements have been entrusted to Mattatall –
Varner Funeral Home, 55 Young Street, Truro, where Art’s
family will receive friends from 4-6 p.m., Friday, February 23, 2024,
and where a Celebration of Life will be held 1 p.m., Saturday,
February 24, 2024. We look forward to hearing your memories and
stories. Reception will follow. Spring interment will be held in Pine
Grove Cemetery, East Stewiacke.
