Gilbert Myles Stuart
1953-2024
Gilbert Myles Stuart, beloved husband, brother, father,
grandfather and friend to many, passed away unexpectedly on February
10, 2024 at the age of 70.
Gil was born on September 28, 1953 in Saint John, NB, a son
of the late Herbert and Vera (McEachern) Stuart. He is
survived by his loving wife of 50 years, Noranne, his sons Matthew
(Erica) Stuart of Canal, NB, and Stephen (Krista) Stuart of
Summerside, PEI, his brother Tim (Linda) Stuart of Chamcook, NB, his
four grandchildren Felicia, Stephanie, Oliver and Nora, his aunt Joyce
(Percy) Stuart as well as many nieces, nephews, great nieces and
nephews, and cousins.
Gil lived his entire life on Deer Island, working most of his
career on the John E. Rigby starting out as night watchman and moving
up to Captain. In retirement he stayed just as busy
volunteering in the community and serving in the Lord’s Cove
Church of Christ where he was an elder and life-long member. He was
also active with the Deer Island Fire Department, was a well known and
loved Cub Scout Leader, volunteered with the St. John Ambulance and
was a Board Member of the Deer Island Credit Union. Gil
organized and led the Remembrance Day Services at Deer Island Point,
paying tribute to his father, uncles and other Islanders who fought in
the war. He spent countless hours doing odd jobs at the
Bayview Christian Camp, helping prepare for the upcoming children
camps. In his free time, Gil enjoyed hunting, fishing,
cutting wood, mowing lawns, and writing poetry.
Gil, or as his grandchildren called him, Papa, played an
active part in the lives of his family. His grandchildren
will remember him for his sense of humor (he was constantly telling
Dad jokes), his faith and his dedication to his family. He
will also be remembered for all of his time spent on the golf course,
where he and his wife enjoyed many rounds of golf either alone, or
with friends. He will be greatly missed by the island
community, the church and his loving family.
Arrangements are in the care of the St. George Funeral Home
(506-755-3533), 26 Portage Street, St. George, NB. Visitation will be
held on Thursday, February 15 from 6-8 pm and Friday, February 16 from
1:00 -2:00 pm at Lord’s Cove Church of Christ. The
Funeral Service will be held following the Friday visitation starting
at 2:00 pm with Rev. Richard Hovey officiating. A family
graveside service will be held at the Fairhaven Community Cemetery and
then all are welcome to join the family for a reception at the Lord
Cove Church of Christ Sunday School at 3:30 pm.
In lieu of flowers, the Stuart Family would appreciate
donations in Gil’s honor be made to the Bayview Christian
Camp or to a charity of the donor’s
choice.
