GLOVER – Robert Earl, the family of Robert Earl Glover (Bob) are saddened to announce that on February 1, 2024, at the age of 89, Bob passed away suddenly in his home in the company of his daughter, Karen, and his beloved wife, Shirley. Bob was born on the family farm in the Glen Kerr District north of Morse, SK on June 8, 1934. He was raised on the family farm and attended Lady Bank school. In grade eight, “like a fool kid” (Bob’s words), he left school to work on a nearby farm. In his adult years, Bob returned to school to further his education and his intelligence and love of knowledge became readily apparent. Bob was a little wild in his youth, telling stories of late night poker games and beerhall antics. Bob eventually left the wild antics behind, but he held onto his youth as the frontman of the local country band, Sagebrush. Bob’s love of music and poker stayed with him until the end.
One of his great joys in life was sharing music and poker games with his family. Bob and Shirley (Ecklund) met at Liberty Hall at the Mid-Summers Dance. Bob would often embarrass Shirley by recalling seeing a “cute girl” at the dance and finally working up the courage to ask her to dance. It must have worked, because Bob and Shirley were married on July 22, 1957 in Riverhurst, Saskatchewan. They celebrated their 66th Wedding Anniversary this past summer.
Bob was a jack of all trades, working on the railroad, buying grain, managing the Co-op, and even selling Electrolux vacuum cleaners. His best years were spent at the Kyle Composite school, where he was a custodian for 21 years. Bob was not afraid of a challenge, so in 1988, he and Shirley opened a seasonal convenience store at Beaver Flat.
Initially, Beaver Flat was a home away from home. However, thanks to Bob’s love of fishing, golfing, gardening, swimming, and even canoe trips in his younger years, Beaver Flat soon became their primary residence. Bob and Shirley came to be such a fixture at Beaver Flat that Bob was eventually referred to as ‘Beaver Bob’. Bob’s family are so grateful that he spent his last summer at the place he loved most. He could be seen everyday sitting outside by the garden watching boats, birds, jet streams, and passersby. Those who knew Bob best know that his tea and tin of tic tac’s and Fisherman’s Friend were never far away.
Bob was predeceased by his parents, John Thomas and Elizabeth (Nancy) Glover; brothers Ted, Jack, and Roger Glover; sisters Norma Oudot, Mary Pavelich, and June Weppler. Bob is lovingly remembered by his wife, Shirley, his children, Kevin (Paula), Keith, and Karen (Mike); grandchildren: Jeffrey, Darrelle (Adam), Audrey, Justin (Jannelle), Kurtis (Cara), Brandon, Alysse (Zack), Zackery, Taylor, Katrina, and Julia (Russell); great-grandchildren: Darrah, Braxton, Harlan, River, Orlan, Hatley, Mirinda, Aven, Brinlee, Ethan, Nixon, and Jayda; his sister, Joan Buckley, sister-in-law, Inez, brothers-in-law, Glen, Garry (Gail), Lorne (Diane), Leroy, Dennis (Joanne), and numerous nieces and nephews.
Bob and Shirley have been so lucky to have been a part of such wonderful communities in Kyle, Beaver Flat, and Stewart Valley. Bob’s family would like to thank the Kyle Health Centre, Home Care, Dr. Cuthbert, Parkside Funeral Home, Wendy and Randy Gunderson, and all of the community members who have provided support during this time.
Those who knew Bob will always remember his love for music, reading, and story telling. His stories of a life well spent will live on through all the people who were lucky enough to hear them.
Keeping with his wishes, the family will hold a private ceremony to lay Bob to rest alongside his family at the Log Valley Cemetery. A celebration of life will take place on Saturday, May 18th, 2024 at the Beaver Flat Community Hall. More details to follow. In lieu of flowers, donations can be made in Bob’s name to the Kyle Health Centre or to a charity of their choice. Funeral arrangements are in care of Parkside Memorial Funeral Home – Ryan Cappelle & Hayden Cappelle.
