Dr. Jack Peter Schwartz
June 26, 1930 – February 4, 2024
Redlands, CA
Age 93, of Redlands, California, passed away on February 4, 2024. Jack was born on June 26, 1930, to Samuel and Anne Schwartz in New York, and grew up in Montreal, Canada. After Jack graduated from Strathcona High School in1947, he went on to study at McGill University, receiving a Bachelor of Arts degree in1951. After graduating from McGill, he began medical school overseas, at the University of Paris, but after one year transferred to the University of Lausanne, in Switzerland, which changed the trajectory of his life. There he met fellow students who would become his life-long friends and colleagues and, on New Year’s Eve, 1956, met Jocelyne Ischi, from Payerne, Switzerland. They quickly fell in love and married on March 31,1958, in Montreal. Following medical school graduation in 1957, Jack began his internship and residency at the Jewish General Hospital (Montreal) and then completed his specialization in Hematology at Montefiore Hospital, in the Bronx, NY. Thereafter, Jack and Jocelyne moved back to Montreal, where Jack became a staff physician in Hematology/ Oncology at the Jewish General Hospital, and where he and Jocelyne raised their children, Anne, born in 1960, and Mark, born in 1963.
In 1983, Jack and Jocelyne decided to leave Montreal for Southern California, where Jack joined the Inland Hematology Oncology Medical Group in San Bernardino, CA, becoming Chief of Staff of the St. Bernadine Medical Center in 1990, and where he stayed until his retirement in the year 2000. Jack was passionate about the profession of medicine and the practice of Hematology/Oncology, and he continued to share his expertise and volunteer his services to the St. Bernadine medical community by serving on various committees at the hospital for the next twenty years.
Jack loved photography, classical music, opera, and reading, but more than anything he loved Jocelyne. Together, they shared a deep love for travel, fine food and wine, and, of course, family. They spent many wonderful weeks each year in Switzerland and other far-flung places with family and friends, exploring new sites and enjoying gastronomical delights. After Jocelyne passed away in 2015, from that point on, life just wasn’t the same.
In addition to Jocelyne, Jack was predeceased by his brother Leslie, stepbrother Gordon, and his nephew Andrew. He is survived by his daughter Anne (Edwin) Carlson, his son Mark (Naomi) Schwartz, loving grandchildren Sophie, Dyllon, Duncan, Ezra and Hillel, and his stepbrother Michael, as well as plenty of nieces, nephews, family, and friends. Services will be held at Congregation Emanu El in Redlands on Wednesday, February 7, 2024 at 12:00 pm. In lieu of flowers, the family requests donations to the American Cancer Society.
