Diane Rayner Obituary
Diane Marriette Rayner passed away peacefully at home, on Sunday January 14th, 2024, with her daughter at her bedside, holding her hand. Diane was predeceased by her loving husband, Benjamin Irwin Rayner. Loving mother to Mark (Nancy) McDermott, and Kim McDermott. Adoring Grandmother to Nathan and Sarah McDermott. Besides her children, Diane is survived by her sisters-in-law, Marie and Liz Babeu, nephews, Eric (Kathleen), Sarkis (Janice), and Richard (Nicole), along with nieces, Annie and Jessica. Diane’s family and her many lifelong friends, Jane & Pat (Bill), Dave & Carol, Joan (Jack) & Janet (Brian), and Kathleen & Charlie made up the entirety of the world she cherished the most. She also loved spending time with her new friends, Devora, Cheryl, and Fran, all of whom made each day a special one.
As adults, Diane’s children enjoyed a special friendship with their mother. Even Mark and Kim’s friends formed their own friendships with Diane. She was that special. Diane loved good company, an inside joke, and another glass of wine. If there was a dance floor, she was on it. Even if it was only a twirl on the patio in her backyard, or making memories while outdancing Kim and her friends by the pool in Florida. Diane was a master chef and lover of elegant cuisine, and every meal she lovingly prepared was indeed the best she and her lucky guests ever had. All of Mark and Kim’s friends loved to have dinner over just to enjoy some of Mrs. Rayner’s wonderful cooking. Her roasted chicken and potatoes were always a favourite when her kids returned home from whichever activities they had jumped into that day. There was always room at Diane’s table for another hungry face.
Diane was an artist and enjoyed all aspects of collecting and painting beautiful landscapes, ranging from her beautiful Keirstead oil paintings to her farmhouse landscapes. She carried her passion for art to young children by teaching arts and crafts in school. Diane taught elementary school in Quebec and Ontario as she was fluent in both languages. Her kind eyes and warm heart ensured her a captivated audience. Everyone loved her dearly.
Diane retired from the Montessori School for Children at the South Common location in Mississauga. Soon after that, Diane’s husband, Ben retired and they made the move from their long-time home in Mississauga, to Prince Edward County. This became their home for almost 20 years. Our mom loved gazing out the great windows in her country home and seeing the beautiful scenery and farmhouse landscapes that she so loved to paint. She loved being surrounded by nature as far as the eye can see. She enjoyed watching Ben spend hours tending to a garden full of vegetables, lettuces, fruits, spices, and anything that would grow in the Ontario climate, because he loved being outdoors in the country. They had truly found “home”. Just as the saying goes, “From farm to table”, Diane would spend hours cooking up everything Ben had grown in the ground. She made soups, salads, dips, roasted vegetables, sauces, desserts, and even drinks from scratch. It was perfect. Ben would always say, «it doesn’t get any better than this». Kids loved it there too.
To know Diane was to love her, and we will miss her profoundly. Diane will be laid to rest alongside her parents and brother in Montreal at a private ceremony in the spring. A celebration of life will follow at her family home at a later date. We will contact those who wish to attend closer to that time. In lieu of flowers, please share stories on Diane‘s website at www.milestonecremation.ca and/or donate to the Cancer Society, Diabetes Association, Kidney Foundation, or local Hospice.
