Surrounded by his loving family, Dr. Alexander (“Alex”) Spira passed away peacefully at home on Thursday, January 18, 2024. Married for 57 years to his beloved wife and best friend, Bonnie Rudner. Devoted father and father-in-law of Brian Spira and Atara Gorsetman, Dr. Avi Spira and Susan Pruyn, Dan Spira and Dena Zyroff, Rabbi Shalom Spira. Cherished grandfather of Noam and Shelly Spira, Ayelet and Lior Cohen, Merav Spira and Liron Spira, Benjamin Spira and Jadon Spira, Daphna and Eli Levy, Tamar Spira, Oren Spira, Talya Spira. Son of Abraham z”l and Lily z”l Spira. Dear brother and brother-in-law of Agnes z”l and Dr. Issie z”l Shkarofsky, Dr. Irwin z”l and Florence Spira, Dr. Martin z”l and Susan z”l Rudner. Alex will also be sadly missed by his many nephews, nieces, cousins, family, and friends.
Born in Svidnik Slovakia, Alex was a Holocaust survivor who immigrated to Canada in 1951. As a graduate of McGill University’s Faculty of Dental Medicine, Alex was remarkably devoted to the care of his patients who adored him for over fifty years. Outside of his professional life, he was generously dedicated to his synagogue and community.
The family would like to thank the wonderful care provided by the Nova, Mount Sinai Hospital and CLSC Rene Cassin Homecare Teams as well as the Jewish General Hospital Cardiac Function Unit.
Funeral service from Paperman & Sons, 3888 Jean Talon St. W. on Friday, January 19 at 2:30 p.m. Burial in Israel, Eretz Hachaim Cemetery. Shiva in Montreal Tuesday from 4:30 to 5:30 p.m., and from 7:00 to 9:00 p.m., Wednesday and Thursday from 9:00 a.m. to 12:00 noon, 2:00 to 5:00 p.m., and 7:00 to 9:00 p.m., Friday from 9:00 a.m. to 1:00 p.m., and Saturday from 6:00 to 9:00 p.m. Daily services to be announced. Donations in his memory can be made to the Magen David Adom.
