Obituary For Roger Howard Mueller
Roger Howard Mueller, 78, born in Grande Prairie, Alberta, on May 19,1945, and a longtime resident of Tacoma, Washington, died on September 12, 2023, at home in Tacoma. Although diagnosed with Parkinson’s disease several years ago, his death was unexpected.
Born to Harley and Jean Mueller (nee Bellamy), Roger spent his formative years in the Peace Country of Northern Alberta, particularly relishing visits to Grandpa and Grandma Bellamy’s farm near smith. He attended Montrose Elementary, Harry Balfour, Grande Prairie High School, and the Northern Alberta Institute of Technology before moving to Washington state in 1964. He eventually wed Mary Willyerd, helping to raise her son and, together, welcoming four sons of their own. After a divorce, he later married Anne Schuller and was instrumental in helping raise her two children.
While still in high school, Roger began his working career at Safeway in his hometown, eventually becoming produce manager. After moving to Tacoma, he joined the Marine Reserves and attended Camp Pendleton boot camp in California. He also worked in banking, for the Elephant Car Wash, sold real estate with Sundown Land Brokers, and taught real estate at Clover Park Technical College. At Clover Park he was named Instructor of the Year by the Real Estate Commission of Washington and was promoted to Dean of Instruction. After leaving Clover Park, Roger moved to Phoenix for a few years, where he started an irrigation company, but returned to Tacoma to work at Color Graphics Printing and for security at the Annie Wright Seminary.
A dedicated father who loved babies, Roger never stopped telling his children how proud he was of them, no matter where they were in life. A man of many talents and interests—who sported one of the greatest mustaches through the 1970s and ‘80s—Roger loved learning, music (he played jazz and boogie-woogie on the piano), dancing, golf, rooting for the Seattle Seahawks, and working the sidelines at the University of Washington Huskies football games. He also loved fast cars, even drag racing on the new Grande Prairie bypass as a teenager and charging along back country roads, stopping to skinny dip in dugouts with buddies. (They know who they are.)
Roger was preceded in death by his parents and his first wife Mary. He leaves behind his sons Roger, Jr., of Irvine, California, twins Brett (Kellie) of Ione, California, and Craig (Lisa) of Tacoma, and Cameron Jon, of Malmӧ, Sweden. Survivors also include his Aunt Janet Ophus, sisters, Karen Coombs and Lisa Parsons, brother, Craig, grandchildren Kayla, Michael, Alexis, Andrew and Kristen, his stepchildren, Aeryk, Christine, and Aaron, former wife Anne, and numerous nieces, nephews, cousins, and friends.
The world will be poorer without Roger’s boisterous, booming guffaw, which never failed to make his listeners laugh along.
A scattering of ashes is planned for next May on what would have been Roger’s 79th birthday.
