In Celebration of
Anna Lomangino
November 18, 1938 –
January 7, 2024
It is with profound sadness that we announce the passing of Anna Lomangino at the age of 85 on Sunday, January 7, 2024 after a long journey through Alzhiehimer’s and a short battle with cancer. Dedicated and devoted mother to Fiorella (Jesse) and beloved Nonna to grandsons Luke, Sam and Adam. Anna is predeceased by her parents Nicola and Domenica Lomangino as well as her brother Onofrio and sisters Sappia and Grazia. She leaves behind siblings Bartolomeo, Nunzia (Giovanni) and Giuseppe, as well as nieces and nephews in both Canada and Italy.
Born in Toritto, Italy, Anna immigrated to Canada in 1960 at the age of 21. Anna showed strength and resilience, learning English, working as a seamstress at Tip Top Tailors (later becoming a supervisor) and learning how to drive; all of which were not common for a young, single woman in the 60s to accomplish on her own. In the 70s, she went on to take business courses and started a career as a public servant for the Ministry of Health. Anna then moved to the Ministry of the Attorney General where she spent 30+ years working her way up to Supervisor of Data Control in the Public Trustee. She was very proud of her career and all that she accomplished.
However, her proudest accomplishment was her daughter and later her grandsons. She poured every ounce of her love and energy into being the best Mom and Nonna they could have ever hoped for. She spent countless hours preparing their favourite meals, hemming clothes, washing and ironing everything (even jeans) and dedicating her life to ensuring her daughter was “on the right path” and could focus on her studies and later her own career. She doted on her grandsons and was always ready with a nutella sandwich or a bowl of Lucky Charms as a treat (something she would have NEVER given to her daughter no matter how much she begged).
Always ready with a homemade meal (often cooking enough “to feed the whole neighbourhood”), Anna enjoyed entertaining and cherished the many great friendships she made and nurtured through her life. Anna showed her love through cooking. Whether it was veal cutlets, lasagna, pizza or her famous panzarotti, Anna would whip up something in the kitchen that was always delicious. “You never ask someone if they would like to eat, you just put the food in front of them and they’ll eat.”
While Alzhiehimer’s took the last 7 years away, Anna would still show her love with a huge smile, a joyous laugh and a big hug. A special thank you to the team on the Reminiscence floor at Sunrise of Erin Mills for taking such good care of Anna right until the end.
Anna will be missed for her energy, her courage, her friendship, her cooking, her sense of style, her words of advice and most of all her immense heart and love for everyone in her life.
In lieu of flowers, donations in memory of Anna can be made to the Alzheimer’s Society.
