It is with great sadness that we announce the passing of Earl Drake, age 73, loving and proud husband, father, grandfather, great-grandfather, uncle and friend, on Thursday, January 4, 2024, at the Cape Breton Regional Hospital. Born on July 19, 1950 in Bridgeport, Lunenburg County, he was the son of the late Levi and Verena “Irene” (Banfield) Drake. He was the last surviving member of his immediate family.
Earl was a mechanic by trade, but could fix or build anything with moving parts. He worked in the machine shop at Marine Atlantic until his retirement in 1986. He also ran his own business for many years. Even after his retirement he still enjoyed being in the shop, fixing or rebuilding old vehicles, especially his 1953 Ford Mercury.
Earl and Helen enjoyed camping, boating, traveling, and parties with his family and friends. They didn’t hesitate to hit the open road in their camper any chance they got, they traveled as far west as British Columbia and as far east as Newfoundland.
Earl is survived by his children – George (Jennifer) Drake, Leah (Hubert) Mertens, Garfield (Shannon) Drake; his step children – Janie (Donnie) Dunphy, Alex (Lynn) Finlayson, Wendy (Pearce) Abbott, Sandra (Alex) Anderson, Kathy (Sandy) Dupont, Dorothy (Martin) DiPaolo, Danny (Nicole) Finlayson, Johnena (Chuck) Finlayson; grandchildren – Stephen, Kyle, Roan, Erin, Breton, Cole, Donnie, Jolene, Christopher, Devin, Jordan, Jennifer, Amy, Cassidy, Allie, Jeff, Daniela, Luca, Raylene, Kendra, Emily, along with many great-grandchildren. He is further survived by many in-laws, with special mention to his best friends, Bud Pero, the “Dutchmen” Frankie, and Arnie Verschuren.
Besides his parents, Earl was predeceased by his treasured wife, Helen; twin sons at birth; step-daughter Helene Finlayson; grandson Baby Danny Christie; sisters – Mira Selieg, Maude Myron, and Phyllis Peach; his great friend, John Pinaud, as well as many in-laws.
The family takes comfort knowing Earl has joined his dance partner.
There will be visitation hours for Earl from 2 to 4p.m. and 7 to 9p.m. on Tuesday, January 9 at the W.J. Dooley Funeral Home at 107 Pleasant St., North Sydney. A funeral service will follow on Wednesday, January 10, at 11a.m. in the funeral home chapel with Rev. Stephen Mills officiating. Burial at Lakeside cemetery will be held in Spring.
