William Arthur (Art) O’Neill Former Police Chief Town of Port Hope, passed away peacefully at the Northumberland Hills Hospital, Cobourg, Ontario, in his 101st year on December 29th, 2023. Art Leaves behind his loving wife and partner of 75 years, Ruth (Campbell). Art also leaves behind his nieces Jacqueline Lindop (Michael), Jane Laurie (Laurie), Mary Jane Tindale (Wade), Linda Davis (Ron), Carol Bent (David), Debra Ashmore, Karen Campbell Henderson, nephew Kevin Campbell, and sister-in-law Yvonne Campbell. Art was predeceased by his sisters Milly Laurie (Jack), and Leona Pursey (Wallace) and nieces Marilyn Hutchinson (Verne), and Nancy Shortreed Laurie (Doug). He will be greatly missed by his many great nieces and nephews, relatives and many friends.
Art served for 32 years as a member of the Port Hope Police Department and was Chief of Police for 22 of those years. He received the Police Exemplary Service Medal for 20 years of service and 30 years of service. He was awarded the Queen’s Jubilee Medal for the years 1952 to 1977. Art was a life member of OACP and CACP. He was director of Zone 3 OACP for 3 years. He was also President of the Rotary Club of Port Hope and held that position on the Club’s 50th Anniversary. He was Charter President of the Dalewood Golf and Curling Club from 1972 to 1974. Golf was his passion. A highlight of his life was scoring a hole in one on the 7th hole of Pebble Beach.
A funeral service will be held at St. Paul’s Presbyterian Church, Port Hope on Wednesday January 10, 2024 at 11 a.m. with visiting one hour prior and reception to follow.
