Hannelore «Hannah» Sawyer
January 17, 1944 – December 31, 2023
Hannah passed peacefully on December 31, 2023, at Bethell Hospice. Dearly beloved wife of Barry (2007). Forever loved by her four sons: Barry & Jenny, Scott, Matt & April and Doug & Kim. Proud Grandma to Ben, Logan, Talia, Carson, Quinn, Elise, Evelyn and Claire.
Born in Germany, Hannah emigrated to Canada at a young age. Predeceased by her parents Werner & Edeltraud Bellinger, and brothers Peter & Klaus. Survived by brother Jurgen, plus nieces & nephews.
Hannah & Barry married in 1963. Hannah is also predeceased by Les & Helen Sawyer, Ruth (Sawyer) & Oscar Gate, Howard, Harold & Joan (Wagstaff) and Glen. Survived by Evelyne (Howard) and Willa (Glen), plus many nieces & nephews.
Raising four boys, Hannah & Barry spent a lifetime as volunteers to Orangeville minor sports. Many lacrosse fans recognize Hannah as the long-time announcing voice of Orangeville Northmen Junior Lacrosse. Some local residents still remember Hannah as their first swim instructor at the old outdoor pool at Idlewyld Park, Orangeville.
Professionally, Hannah worked 30 years as a Court Clerk in the Provincial Court of Ontario, Orangeville Courthouse. She was well-respected amongst her colleagues, and was a familiar face to many a local who sought her help to navigate the courts.
Hannah was unique in her own many ways. She was a dog lover & walker; she was a gardener; she was a kayaker & swimmer; she loved the warm weather and to be outdoors. She would putter in the garden or lounge in the sun on her patio, with a book and her dogs and a glass of wine. She was caring and a good friend; she was fun & spontaneous; she was stubborn & head-strong; she was simple, direct, and «tell it like it is» … with Hannah, you got it all, and that is why we loved her.
Our Mom was the «cool mom» who was liberal to allow her kids to find their own way, who supported us in any endeavour, and she was always there to rescue us, unreservedly, if needed. Our lives are blessed due to Mom & Dad. Rest in peace Mom & Dad, now together forever!
The Sawyer family is very grateful to special friends George, Jane, Janet, Gloria, Lynda, Karen, and all others who gave love, care, and made memories with Mom; Hannah loved you. Thank you to PSW Ginny and the caring staff at Bethell Hospice.
As per Hannah’s wishes, there will be no funeral service. Spring interment will occur, with a private graveside service. Friends & family are welcome to gather for a public Celebration of Life at the Dods & McNair Funeral Home, Chapel & Reception Centre 21 First St. Orangeville on June 15, 2024, from 1:00 – 4:00 pm. Spoken remarks will start at 3:00 pm.
If you wish, in lieu of flowers, memorial donations to Bethell Hospice Foundation, or to the Orangeville Northmen Documentary Project (inquire direct with the funeral home), would be nicely appreciated by the family. Thank you.
A tree will be planted in memory of Hannah in the Dods & McNair Memorial Forest at the Island Lake Conservation Area, Orangeville. 22nd Annual Dedication Service will be held on Sunday, September 8, 2024 at 2:00 p.m.
