Winnifred Maud «Winnie» (Nelson) Kettleson
– 87, Truro, passed away on Friday, December 29, 2023, at
Colchester East Hants Health Centre, Truro. Winnie was born in
Innisfree, Alberta, and grew up in Minburn.
She was predeceased by her parents, Annie Mae Elizabeth
Robinson and Clarence Cecil Nelson; siblings, Raymond, Clifford,
Doreen, David; nephew, Cecil. She is survived by her nieces, Vicki,
Karen, Shelley; nephew, Kevin; Godchild, Christine; friends, Ina,
Dianne, Jean and Gayle, her «Major» family.
Winnie threw a mean softball as a pitcher, she curled and
always had a book on the go (never waited for the soft cover version).
Her greatest love and pastime was bird watching, which she could do
from her chair in the den. There were many choice words for the deer
that ate her flowers.
She graduated nursing from Archer Memorial Hospital, Lamont,
Alberta. She did a post grad in Operating Technique and Management at
Vancouver General Hospital and subsequently worked in Lamont, Elk
Point, Hinton, Wetaskwin and Fort McMurray. In 1971 she moved to Nova
Scotia and worked for nine years in the OR at Colchester
Hospital.
She always considered herself «first and foremost a
proud member of the nursing profession». She served as President
of Nova Scotia Nurses Union for two terms before taking on the staff
role of Labour Relations Officer. In 1980, she was chosen to attend
the prestigious HRH Duke of Edinburgh Commonwealth Study Conference
and came away with remarkable leadership skills as well as a broadened
sense of critical global issues. She honed those leadership skills
over the years and served as advisor to many colleagues and Board
members who gained from her wisdom, experience and devotion to
excellence and integrity. She negotiated over sixty collective
agreements during her work as Labour Relations Officer for NSNU. She
was an active member of many Boards, associated with Canadian Nurses
Association (having served two terms as Board member), Registered
Nurses Association of Nova Scotia and Dalhousie University.
Winnie’s NSNU nickname became «1-800-Winnie» for
the sound advice and support she gave. Winnie always made a point of
challenging members to think and read and work out answers and
solutions. Many nurses who have served in leadership roles have her to
thank. She was a remarkable woman who made such a difference along the
way.
Winnie’s favourite charities were Foster Parents
Plan and Hope for Wildlife.
Graveside service will be held in Spring 2024 at Terrace Hill
Cemetery.
Arrangements have been entrusted to Mattatall –
Varner Funeral Home, 55 Young Street, Truro. Tributes, words of
