Joan Elizabeth (Thompson) Taylor – 82, Bible Hill, passed
away peacefully, with loving family by her side, on the morning of
Sunday, December 17, 2023, at Colchester East Hants Health Centre,
Truro. Born on Tatamagouche Mountain, she was the daughter of the late
Russell and Inez (MacLellan) Thompson.
Joan is survived by her sons, Shawn Taylor, Bible Hill; Brian
Taylor (Christine), Kentville; grandchildren, Cheryl McLeod (James),
East Mountain; Charles Munro (Kristy), Moncton, New Brunswick; Dustin
Taylor, Bible Hill; Devon Taylor, Fredericton, New Brunswick; Jackie
Taylor, Edmonton, Alberta; Lindsay Taylor, Kentville; siblings,
Margaret Thompson, Truro; Kori Nickerson (Odie), Ontario; Clifford
Thompson (Sandra), Ontario; many great grandchildren, as well as, many
nieces and nephews. Along with her parents, she was predeceased by her
husband, Roy Taylor; daughters, Elizabeth Munro, Tracy Crocker; son,
Barry Taylor; brothers, Glen Thompson, Roache Thompson; sisters, Lola
Cock, Elfreda Higgins, Faye Ernest, Iva Nelson, Shirley
Swan.
Joan left home from Tatamagouche Mountain in her teenage
years to start her life in the Truro area. She was a very hard worker,
beginning young to support herself, and continuing working well into
her 70s, when she had a car accident that physically stopped her from
working, but, to be clear, did not slow her down one bit! She poured
her life into her family, speaking weekly, if not daily to siblings,
both in and out of province, as well as, running around after kids,
then grandkids, then her great grandkids. In her
«retirement», she cared for her great grandkids, Owen and
Sam, whom she was never short on stories about.
Joan was full of this amazing energy, as well as a very
stubborn nature, that right up until the last little bit, never let
her give up or back down. Joan was quick to help others, but slow to
accept it herself for fear of being a burden in any way. She had a
cheerful hello and chuckle to all who greeted her, even if she
couldn’t quite remember how she knew them, or which child or
grandchild she knew them through. Many people referred to her fondly
as «Nan» over the years and she loved that more than anyone
will ever know.
Her love (even obsession maybe) of famous singer, Elvis
Presley is one her family and friends will always remember warmly. She
had so many of his records, tapes, CDs, Christmas ornaments,
knick-knacks, and yes, at one point, even a singing telephone that
swayed his hips as it rang. She swore he was still alive and he would
find her one day. She attended a Thane Dunn concert with her sister,
quite enjoying herself, but knowing as good as he was, he was not the
real thing.
Life was not always kind to her.
Joan overcame a lot of loss and misfortune in her life, including the
loss of many of those close to her that hurt her deeply and made her
cling more tightly to those in her life. What could have crumbled the
spirit of some, helped Joan to build character, giving all she had to
those around her. She will be greatly missed by all those she
knew.
A special thank you is extended to all the staff on the third
floor of Colchester East Hants Health Centre. Your kindness and care
did not go unnoticed and helped her feel even more love in her final
weeks.
You can honor your own memories of Joan by making a donation
to LA Animal Shelter through the funeral home. In keeping with
Joan’s wishes, there will be no funeral service. There will
be a graveside celebration of life in the spring for the
family.
Arrangements have been entrusted to Mattatall – Varner
Funeral Home, 55 Young Street, Truro. Public messages of condolence
