MAURICE EDWARD DAYNARD
(July 11, 1932 – December 6, 2023)
Surrounded by loving family and caregivers at the Carleton Place Terrace on Wednesday, December 6th, 2023, Maurice Edward Daynard, at the age of 91, passed peacefully from this world to be with his Saviour Jesus Christ. Maurice was the fifth of seven children born to Percy and Emma Daynard. He was the beloved husband of Shirley Hodge (Graves) for over 32 years, and previously the beloved husband of the late Joan Childs for over 36 years.
Loved father of Cheryl (John) Scorgie, Carol (Bill) Welch, and step-children Cynthia (Greg) Baker and Ron Hodge (Robert Hijman).
Loved grandfather of Joshua (Sheena) Scorgie, Christina (Joel) Booker, Maria (Kevin) Trace, Leslie (John) Qualls, Matthew (Amanda) Welch, and Peter Welch. Loved step-grandfather of Erin (Brent) Nickle, Patrick (Brooke) Malloy, Brittany (Drew Kinnear) Baker, and Jordan Baker.
Loved great-grandfather of Benjamin and Ezra, Bethany and Josiah, Micah and Amaya. Loved great step-grandfather of Ava and Oliver, Grayson and Harper, and Cade.
Born and raised in a rural setting in Sault St. Marie, Ontario, Maurice married his sweetheart Joan in 1953 and started his family in a Sault country setting also. He was a hard-working family man determined to care for his family, and was employed by the Canadian Pacific Railway in various roles (rate clerk, office manager, sales manager, and district manager) for his full working career. Appreciated by the CPR for his strong work ethic, Maurice received a number of promotions which required him to move from Sault Ste. Marie to North Bay, to Toronto, and finally to Smiths Falls. He retired early at the age of 55. After the death of his first wife, Maurice married his new love, Shirley, in 1991, and his family doubled.
Retirement was filled with a wide variety of activities. Keeping everything clean, neat, and in good working order, he loved to work in his yard and in his home. Travel and camping were great delights, one of the biggest adventures being a trip to Australia. Woodworking was a hobby in which both Maurice and Shirley were skilled, and they spent many years creating and sharing with family and friends a wide variety of their wooden handiwork. Knitting, rug-hooking, keeping up with technology, gardening, house projects…his days were filled with many satisfying endeavors.
Maurice took great delight in the lives of his family members, always cherishing their news and photos. He joined in on as many family gatherings and events as possible, and was willing to travel the distances necessary to stay in touch. Yearly trips were made to Nova Scotia for Shirley’s family reunions.
Maurice will be remembered for his perseverance, his ability to take large tasks and break them into smaller, more manageable pieces. He was organized, conscientious, had an eye for detail, and was an excellent problem-solver. He was a quiet man who throughout his life was generous to those in need.
Many lives were touched and enriched by knowing Maurice, and he will be missed greatly. We look forward to seeing him again in heaven.
