Obituary
Virginia Shun Fai Choi (Dec 26, 1948 – Dec 1, 2023): It is with heavy hearts and great sadness that we announce the sudden passing of Virginia Choi at the age of 74, after a short and brave month-long battle with breast cancer that returned after 6 years in remission. Virginia was born in Shantou, China to parents Choi Lai Chun (mother) and Lam Wang Leung (father). Virginia was the eldest of nine children. In 1970 Virginia met Jimmy Yuen Shek Choi, whom she married in Hong Kong. In 1972, Virginia and Jimmy bravely decided to come to Canada for a better future for their family and not long after arriving in Canada, they gave birth to their daughter, Lena followed a few years later by the birth of their son, Rick.
Like many other immigrants, Virginia made tremendous sacrifices for the sake of her family. She took difficult jobs and worked hard to provide for her children. She took pride in learning the English language and with her new found language skills, she quickly advanced her career in the health care profession, starting with entry level cleaning jobs at the hospital and eventually progressing to prepping surgical tools for operating rooms at University Hospital in London, Ontario, where she worked until her retirement.
She loved to entertain, and with her infectious, warm, and outgoing personality, she made many friends in her lifetime, and was always up for a good party or time spent with friends. When it came to family, Virginia loved to spend time with her children Lena and Rick, and with her 8 siblings and their extended families, who all looked up to her as the family matriarch. But nothing brought Virginia more joy than the time she spent with her two grandsons, Noah, and JJ, whom she loved dearly and was immensely proud of. She cared for them when they were infants, watched their many piano recitals, sporting events, loved to take them to the cinema for a good movie, taught them how to cook her favorite recipes, read them stories, taught them Chinese, took them on vacations, and simply cherished the quality time she spent with them over the years.
In her retirement years, Virginia was a faithful servant of God through her unwavering Catholic faith. She spent many hours volunteering through her church, was an active member of the choir, various prayer groups, community outreach to Yee Hong Senior Center, Legion Mary Mission, Divine Mercy Mission, and Cursillo Christianity Mission through her home parish, the Chinese Martyrs Catholic Church in Markham, Ontario.
Virginia is preceded in death by her husband Jimmy (2017) whom she was married to for 46 years. She lovingly leaves behind her son Rick, daughter Lena (husband Alan), grandsons Noah and “JJ” Jacob. She also leaves behind her siblings, sister Josephine Pang (husband Wayne Pang, children Elton and Janice). Sister Kitty Lam (husband Andrew Tsang, children Cathy and Lily and their respective spouses and children). Sister Betty Lam (daughter Terry). Sister Teresa Chan (husband Urban Chan, Children Kelly (spouse Jake) and Connie). Brother Patrick Lam (son Anson). Brother Raymond Lam. Sister Agnes Lam (son Matthew), and brother Eric Lam (wife Winnie and daughter Charlotte).
In her last moments, Virginia passed away peacefully, free of pain or suffering to reunite with Jimmy and join God’s kingdom of eternal peace in Heaven. If desired, donations may be made to Sunnybrook Hospital Foundation Odette Cancer Center in memory of Virginia Choi.
