GILCHRIST, Pamela – Passed away peacefully at Victoria Manor Long-Term Care Home in Lindsay, Ontario on Wednesday, November 15, 2023, two weeks before her 81st birthday.
Pam was born on November 30, 1942 in Manchester, UK. She was the middle child of Edna and Harold Knight, with an older sister Julie and a younger brother Graham. Pam was a pupil at Manchester’s Central High School for Girls, and her report cards show her to have been a serious and hard-working student, much appreciated by her teachers. After graduating from high school, Pam scored highly on the UK Civil Service entrance examination and was accepted into an administrative role at the Ministry of Transport.
The turning point of Pam’s life came just before she turned 17 when she met William (Bill) Gilchrist on a blind double date. Both Pam and Bill were reluctant to go on the date and had to be persuaded by the other pair (Pam’s sister Julie and Bill’s friend Arthur). But it was love at first sight and they spent the next 64 years devoted to each other, almost never apart. They would have celebrated their 63rd wedding anniversary on December 3, 2023.
Pam and Bill soon started a family, which grew to two daughters and two sons within five years. Once her children reached school age, Pam returned to the professional world and rejoined the UK Civil Service. In 1975, Pam and Bill made the difficult decision to leave behind their families of origin and emigrate to Canada in order to provide greater opportunities for their children. They lived in Calgary, Kelowna and the Greater Toronto area, and Pam built her career in the banking sector, eventually retiring as a Business Account Manager at RBC.
After retirement, Pam and Bill moved full-time to what had been their weekend home in Wellington, Prince Edward County, where they spent many happy years. They enjoyed several ocean cruises, visiting the Mediterranean, the Caribbean, the Baltics, Australia and New Zealand. Pam and Bill reluctantly left Wellington and returned to the GTA to be closer to health care services. They recently accepted their son Stuart and daughter-in-law Lynne’s invitation to move into their home in Caesarea, near Port Perry.
In addition to being a banking professional, Pam was also a skilled seamstress. Her crowning achievement was the creation of the bridal gown and bridesmaids’ dresses for her younger daughter’s wedding. She also inherited her mother’s love of knitting and made dozens of beautiful garments for her children and grandchildren. While very proud to be Canadian, Pam was also firmly anchored to her UK roots, and still had an English accent after 48 years in Canada. She loved nothing more than watching Coronation Street with a nice cup of Yorkshire tea and a digestive biscuit, with her beloved cats Boo and Sox curled up at her feet.
Pam is survived by her adoring husband Bill, her life partner of 64 years, and their four children: Jane (Peter), Stephen (Leslie), Anne (the late Claudio) and Stuart (Lynne), as well as seven grandchildren and two great-grandchildren. She is also survived by her brother Graham Knight, her sister-in-law Elsie Knight, and her sister-in-law and brother-in-law, Maire and John Glennon, along with six nieces and nephews and their families. Pam was predeceased by her parents Edna and Harold Knight, her stepfather James McMullen, her sister Julie Knight, her parents-in-law Anne and William Gilchrist, and her son-in-law Claudio Sacco. We pray she is now reunited with them.
As Pam’s health deteriorated, she spent the final weeks of her life at Victoria Manor Long-Term Care Home in Lindsay, where the staff cared for her with exceptional kindness and compassion. We, her family, are extremely grateful to those dedicated, caring professionals.
In accordance with Pam’s wishes, there will be no funeral service. Cremation has taken place.
Pam, you are loved beyond words and missed beyond measure. You will be in our hearts forever and we will be together again in time.
