Obituary
Jean (Tennant) Bye
Jean passed away peacefully on Tuesday, November 14, 2023 in Owen Sound. Born in nearby Vandeleur in 1924, Jean (nee Buchanan) was five days short of her 99th birthday. She had a full, love-filled life.
Jean was the cherished wife of Dr. Milton Bye of Owen Sound. They shared 46 wonderful years together.
In 1947, Jean graduated from University of Toronto’s Occupational Therapy program and began work with wounded war veterans. She and Glenn Tennant were married in Owen Sound in 1951 and they settled in North York where Glenn worked for the Board of Education. They had three children – David, Christopher (Barbara) and Cathy (Bill Jeffery), all of Toronto. Active in the UCW and Girl Guides, she managed a happy bustling home. Sadly, Glenn died in 1973.
Jean and Milt married in 1977. They had been OSCVI classmates, and their union returned Jean to Owen Sound and into the lives of Milt’s children – Nancy (Wayne Wrightson) of Owen Sound and Stephen Bye (died December 2018). The years were happy and busy with a growing family, social activities, and travel. It was a great second act for both Jean and Milt. Over the years, Jean was the happy recipient of many loving poems Milt would write for her.
Jean’s life exemplified the best of both small-town virtues (being of service to family, friends and community) and world-class flair (her personal style, home décor, and entertaining). Her creativity was expressed through fabulous meals, gardening and jewelry-making. She was a founding member of the Baker Street bridge club, and enjoyed the OS Little Theatre, Georgian Bay Symphony, OS Golf Club, and her Red Hats group.
Jean set an enviable example of excellence in all that she did; her life was one her family admired and continues to be guided by.
She will be greatly missed by Milt, their children, spouses, and 10 grandchildren: Patrick, Jordan, Alia, Harrison, James, Catherine, William, James, Stephen and Sam, and their respective spouses. And, her 6 great-grandchildren: Aedan, Logan, Hannah, Tatum, Bodhi and Caden. She was loved by her many nieces, nephews, and other dear family members. Jean was cherished by her many friends, some of whom she had known since public school and OT. Jean’s parents were Samuel and Janet Buchanan, and her three siblings were Jack Buchanan, Mary (Brackenborough) and Ruth (Rudolph).
Jean’s family are grateful to many people who helped her in recent years, in particular Megan McNabb, Penny Yates-Irwin and the caregivers at Summit Place. A private family service and internment has been held. A Celebration of Jean’s life is planned for the new year (she did love a good party!).
If desired, donations may be made to Grey Bruce Hospice (Chapman House) or Georgian Shores United Church. Online condolences may be sent to Jean’s family by visiting www.woodfuneralhome.ca.
