Obituary of Richard Alexander Floyd
January 11, 1941 – Victoria, British Columbia
November 14, 2023 – Calgary, Alberta
Richard Alexander Floyd passed away peacefully on Tuesday, November 14, 2023, at the SkyPointe Hospice in Calgary, AB, at the age of 82 years.
Richard is survived by his loving wife Anne Elizabeth “Betty” (nee Crozier) of 59 years and is lovingly remembered by his daughters Diane (Terry Hietanen) in British Columbia and Lori (Darryl Kelly); and his grandchildren Sarah Floyd, Ashley Hietanen, and Maddigan Kelly in Alberta. He is also survived by his sister Gayle, and brother Ken Floyd. He was predeceased by his brothers, Jim and Lawrence Floyd.
Dad was the eldest son, born to Donald Floyd and Verna (nee Tocher) in Victoria, BC, on November 1, 1941. Attending Bellmont high school in the Langford area, he was active in athletics.
In 1962, he joined the RCMP and was off to “Depot” training in Regina, SK. This is where he learned to ride a horse and fall off, without permission. He was then posted to “K” Division (Alberta), serving communities including Banff, Okotoks, Cochrane, Calgary, Olds, and Olds Highway Patrol. Through his service, he met many community members that became lifelong friends.
In 1974, he was transferred to the newly formed unit of Commercial Crime at the Edmonton Sub Div building. He became a Justice of the Peace. He was proud of his service in the RCMP and enjoyed working on, and solving, complex commercial crime files. Dad appreciated his in-laws support when he was doing courses in Ottawa. He loved the home cooking. The family settled in Sherwood Park during this time.
In 1997, he retired from the RCMP at the rank of Staff Sergent. Dad did join the security team at the Casino on Argyll Road for five years to keep himself busy. He then transitioned into full time retirement. Dad’s passions included oil painting, gardening, photography, and decorating for Christmas. The more lights the merrier! He also enjoyed traveling with his beloved wife Betty and family members, as he explored the east and west coast of Canada, Mexico, Florida, and Hawaii. In the fall of 2023, he and his wife moved to Prince of Peace assisted living to be closer to family in Calgary, AB.
The family would like acknowledge brother-in-law Chris (Maria) Crozier, and sister-in-law Waveney (Tom) Ockey for the love and support over the years, and especially during this time.
There will be a Celebration of Richard’s Life, as well as an interment service in the Rosebank Cemetery, in Renfrew, Ontario. Details will be announced at a later date.
