It is with heavy hearts we announce the passing of John R Kaczur on November 10, 2023, after a five-year battle with interstitial lung disease. John was born in Esterhazy, Saskatchewan, on July 3, 1946, to John and Mary (Stadler) Kaczur. John was the youngest of three boys and they lived on a farm south of Dubuc before eventually moving to the farmhouse just north of town. John attended school in Dubuc and at the age of 16 he began a long farming career with his father John. In 1969, he married Bernice (Issel) and soon after they welcomed two children, Raeleen and Travis. John and Bernice’s life was filled with family and friends. Birthdays, anniversaries, weddings and holidays were all attended on a regular basis as family was very important to them. John and Bernice loved country music and often joined friends and family at the Dauphin Countryfest. For John, he always put his family first. Like his dad, John also had a love of cars and took great pride in keeping his vehicles shiny, clean and in good condition. If you had a car issue, John was your first phone call as he knew so much about cars.
John farmed at Dubuc, Saskatchewan, until 2010, proudly growing wheat, canola and flax. He was very proud to have brought in the harvest 50 times over the course of his lifetime. After selling the farm they purchased a home in Strathmore, where they moved in late 2010. John was not quite ready to retire, he was someone who liked to keep busy, so he set out to find new employment opportunities. While finishing his farming career he worked for Sharpe’s Soil Services in Stockholm, Saskatchewan delivering fertilizer. Then upon arrival in Alberta he began working with DynAgra, also delivering fertilizer. One of the customers he delivered to was Jackson Farms and each time he made his delivery to them he told them they should hire him. His persistence paid off when one day they finally hired him. He worked there for three years before moving on to work for Gray’s Limited delivering aggregate rock. He liked this job as it took him to many new places in the province and he met new people everywhere he went. Finally, he landed at Strangmuir Farms where he met many new people and really enjoyed his time. The company was so wonderful to its staff, and they gifted John many times with tickets to the rodeo or the Calgary Flames along with their annual holiday dinners. They made him feel part of a wonderful family.
John wore many hats, he was a son, a husband, a father and grandfather, a farmer, an inventor, Uncle Johnny, and a friend to many. He was somebody that was always willing to lend a helping hand and there were very few things he could not fix. John cherished his time with his children. Every summer you could find him at Crooked Lake with his trailer and boat. He spent hours on the lake towing his kids and their friends behind the boat. At night he was by the campfire, telling stories, watching the night sky for sputniks and planning his late-night hot dog. The winters were spent traveling to skating, curling, or hockey, whatever the kids were into at the time. He was an amazing hockey dad, cheering his son on as he made his way to the SJHL and gathering lifelong friends along the way. Later when he became a grandfather, he became a cheerleader for his grandchildren’s sports, attending concerts, baseball, hockey, basketball and soccer games. When he couldn’t be there in person, he was watching their sports online, cheering them along.
John is survived by his wife, Bernice; children Raeleen (Drew) Giles; Travis (Stacey) Kaczur; grandchildren, Ashton and Ethan Giles and Kendra and Kiana Kaczur; brother Joe (Leona) Kaczur; sister-in-law Virginia Kaczur; and numerous in-laws, nieces and nephews. He was predeceased by his parents John and Mary Kaczur and brother Albert.
John had a smile that could light up a room and a belly laugh that was second to none. His memory will live on in the hearts of those who were fortunate to be a part of his life. He will be dearly missed and fondly remembered by all who had the privilege to know him. Memorial donations may be made to the Canadian Lung Association at www.lung.ca or by mail at 502-885 Meadowlands Drive, Ottawa, ON, K2C 3N2. As per John’s wishes, there will be no services. John’s final resting place will be at the Strathmore Cemetery Columbarium.
