Hand, Kenneth Robert
May 15, 1944 – November 7, 2023
Suddenly but peacefully, in the early hours of Tuesday, November 7, at 79 years of age, Kenn left this world.
He was the beloved husband of Lynn Sullivan, with whom he had shared 59 years of marriage, after meeting at the ages of 17 and 15. The two of them were inseparable and shared many interests.
Kenn was the youngest child of, and predeceased by, John Collett “Jack” and Violet Talbot. The baby of the family, he looked up to his older siblings Ben John (deceased) and his wife Doreen (deceased), Colin and his wife Norma, John (deceased) and his wife Pat, Lavinia (deceased) and her husband Jim (deceased), Wesley and his wife Gillian (deceased). A close knit family, they got up to all sorts of antics as they were growing up, further strengthening their bonds. Stories of those times still entertain his brothers, children, nieces and nephews in the UK and Canada, and grandchildren. Kenn was brother-in-law to Kerry and Tim Dews and Robert (deceased) and Sharon Sullivan.
Kenn was the much, much loved dad and grandad of: Tracey Hand-Breckenridge and Ian Breckenridge and their children Sarah Breckenridge-Payne and her husband Tim Payne, Ian Andrew Breckenridge and his fiancé Jessica Murphy; Jenny and Barry Sawyer, and their children Ben and Logan; and Matthew and Camy Hand and their children Jackson, Jacob, Cassandra, Coleby and Chase. He never missed an opportunity to offer support, a shoulder or advice and taught good discipline and respect along the way.
His sense of humour, wisdom and strong work ethic were shared generously. He learned the rules of hockey and lacrosse and revived his childhood love of soccer so that he could show encouragement to his grandchildren both on and off the field, rink, arena or pool. He took an interest in what interested them, and mentored the older grandchildren through his business. They have all inherited his sense of humour and quick wit. Kenn was so very proud of all of them. Earlier this year, the birth of Jack Payne made him a great grandad, and despite his diminished awareness, he knew who Jack was.
Raised in Wolverhampton, England, Kenn attended college and became an electrician, and, a few years later, made a career change and joined the West Midlands Police. In 1974, he and Lynn and their children emigrated to Canada, whereupon he joined the newly minted Peel Regional Police Force. Throughout his years there, he served on the canine unit, was a training officer and a tenacious, well-respected detective in various bureaus. He and his long-time partner and friend, George Roberts, never lost a case that they worked together. Kenn was a runner and ran competitively in Canada and the US.
It was Kenn’s request that there not be a funeral, so, instead, a celebratory gathering will be held on Sunday, June 23, 2024 from 4:00 p.m. – 7:00 p.m., at Dods & McNair Funeral Home, Chapel & Reception Centre 21 First Street, Orangeville, ON. L9W 2C8.
A tree will be planted in memory of Kenneth in the Dods & McNair Memorial Forest at the Island Lake Conservation Area, Orangeville. 22nd Annual Dedication Service will be held on Sunday, September 8, 2024 at 2:00 p.m.
Goodnight, God bless, Kenn. Mind how you go. We love you.
