It is with heavy hearts that the family of Marilyn Eila Drinnan announces her passing on Wednesday, October 25, 2023. She departed peacefully from a sudden but brief illness at High River, Alberta where she has been residing for the last five years.
Marilyn was born to Layton and Alice Gardner (Johnson) on February 10, 1938, in Calgary and was brought up in the farming community of Delacour, Alberta along with her brother Lon, and sister Doreen. She attended the local schools of the area and later at Crescent Heights High School in Calgary.
She was married in Calgary in 1954 to Ronald Oliver Drinnan. Although the marriage did not last, two children came from the union, Jim and Connie. Marilyn continued to raise her children while becoming a career woman.
Marilyn spent many years working for the City of Calgary, first at City Hall and then moved on to the Mechanical Services Department. She continued her professional career in the S.A.I.T. payroll department until retirement.
Gardening was always one of Marilyn’s favorite hobbies. She also enjoyed walking, hiking, cross country skiing, swimming, and indulging herself occasionally at Banff’s hot springs. Marilyn immensely enjoyed hosting the family gatherings at her home in Calgary, indulging in some old favorite recipes as well as trying out new ones.
Marilyn was predeceased by her parents; her sister; and grandson Byran Drinnan. She leaves to mourn her brother Lon Gardner (Lorraine Schnurr); son, Jim Drinnan (Joyce O’Neill): daughter Connie Hollenbeck; granddaughters Annie Drinnan, Sarah Hollenbeck; and granddaughter in law Kayleigh Nielson, niece Allison McLean (Jonah); great nephew Ben Keim; great nieces Caroline Keim, Abigail Keim; and several cousins.
Marilyn’s family wish to acknowledge her friends at Season’s in High River and thank everyone for the support they gave to her during her time there.
In accordance with Marilyn’s wishes there will not be a funeral. She will be laid to rest alongside her parents and sister at Calgary’s Memorial Gardens Cemetery.
In lieu of flowers, the family asks a donation be considered to Glaucoma Research Society of Canada or The Canadian Institute for the blind.
