Obituary
It is with heavy hearts that we announce the passing of Phillip James Walsh, a beloved husband, father, and grandfather. He peacefully departed on October 24, 2023, at Pleasant View Towers, Long Term Care Facility, with his devoted wife Marion by his side.
Phil was preceded in death by his daughter Melinda in May 2023; his parents Ellen and Gus; sisters Bernice, Betty, Kathleen, Bride, Madeline, and Mary; as well as brothers Leo, Tom, and Gus. He is survived by his loving sister Alice and brother Albert (Mazie).
He leaves behind his devoted wife Marion, to whom he was married for 57 years; and his children Regina (James), Brian (Leslie), Millie; grandchildren Laura (Geoff), Dax, Vera and Miranda. Phil also had many nieces, nephews, and a large circle of extended family members and friends who will cherish his memory.
Phil was born in Terra Nova and later moved to Windsor in 1943. He dedicated 42 years of his life to working at Abitibi Paper Mill. Phil was a loving husband, father, and grandfather, unwavering in his devotion to his family. He was an active member of the Lions Club, Knights of Columbus, and the Royal Canadian Legion. Phil found joy in the simple things in life, such as relaxing on his back deck with a cold beverage, savoring an ice cream at any time of day, enjoying a game of cribbage or cards and reading anything history related. He cherished car rides to the Salmon ladder and the camaraderie at the Legion over a cold drink.
In the last three years of his life, Phil embarked on a health journey with dementia. He received care at the Central Newfoundland Regional Health Centre, Dr. Hugh Twomey Health Care Centre in Botwood. With the perseverance of his daughter Melinda, he was transferred to St. John’s, Pleasant View Towers (PVT), Long Term Care Facility for the last four months of his care, where his loving wife Marion was able to visit him frequently.
The family would like to extend a heartfelt thank you to the staff at each facility who provided care during Phil’s health journey. A special appreciation goes to the staff on 1 South East at PVT for their warm smiles and kind words during his final days. Phil developed friendships with Warren and Tony during his journey with Dementia. He spent many hours walking the corridors with Warren and he had a special fondness for sandwiches from the sandwich lady.
As an expression of sympathy, the family kindly requests donations be made to a charity of your choice. In Phil’s memory, he would be pleased if you tried your luck with a lotto ticket or shared a home-cooked meal with your loved ones, especially one finished with dessert. Today, savor an ice cream while sitting on a bench, take in the beauty of your surroundings, or play a game of cribbage or cards.
Phil will be resting at Hoskins Funeral Home, Grand Falls Windsor.
