YOVANOVICH, Grozda – On October 22, 2023, with heavy hearts, we said goodbye to our beloved matriarch; the glue of our family; our mama, baka, and tetka Grozda.
At the age of 95, Grozda leaves behind her children Zlata (Bata), Gordana (Dragan), and Žica (Svetlana); grandchildren Marko, Kristina (Christian), and Larisa (Matthew); great-grandchildren Sophia, Kalina, and Isla Rose; nephew Aca and family; great-nephew Pera and family; cousin Milena (Dobro) and family of Montreal; as well as many dear friends and relatives both in Canada and Serbia.
Grozda was born the youngest of five children to Dimitrije and Jana Katić on the family homestead near Valjevska Kamenica. After living through WWII and tragically losing her father, she eventually met her future husband, Živko Jovanović. They built a life together, raising their children, and running the family kafana until they moved to Niagara Falls in 1973 to join Živko’s brother, Žika «Jack» Yovanovich, his wife Katica, and family. They joined the bustling Serbian community and formed many life-long friendships. Grozda was a proud member of the Kolo Srpskih Sestara for many decades. While they were able, she and Živko would visit Serbia every summer and stay in the beloved family home, which was the site of many parties, family reunions, meals, and love.
Grozda was a loving mother, doting grandmother and great-grandmother, caring aunt, and faithful friend whose door was always open to visitors, and who expressed her love through food and service. She could never let anyone leave without having something to eat or drink, she always had something to send home with her guests, and she went out of her way to prepare someone’s favourite meal if they were coming to visit. Even when mobility was difficult, she would insist on standing and doing something in the kitchen «her way.»
Her greatest joy was children: her warmth and jolly kindness immediately came through in the presence of a child, and her terms of endearment were tender and plentiful.
Grozda was blessed with good health her whole life, and complete mental clarity until the very end, and we are grateful that we got to spend so many years with her.
She joins in the Heavenly Kingdom her beloved husband Živko (1922-2008) and infant son Miša (1953-1954); her parents and siblings; her brother- and sister-in-law; and much-loved nieces and nephews who departed too soon.
The family would like to extend our heartfelt thanks to Ljilja for her wonderful care and companionship, as well as to the staff at Douglas Memorial Hospital in Fort Erie for their kindness.
Friends are invited to Morse & Son Funeral Home, 5917 Main Street, Niagara Falls on Sunday October 29, 2023 from 6 to 9 pm.
